This grave marker is inscribed “FATHER” and marks the resting place of James Gaunt (September 9, 1813 – February 24, 1895), a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Marriot) Gaunt. James was born in England and married his first wife Charlotte Ann Grantham (Gaunt), in 1842. James and Charlotte had a son who died in 1845, and Charlotte died in 1846. In 1848 James married Phebe (Wilkinson) Gaunt (June 7, 1815 – December 19, 1889), daughter of John and Mary (Garner) Wilkinson. James, Phebe, and their infant son emigrated to the United States in 1850, where they settled in Milford, Oakland County, Michigan. By the fall of 1853 they had re-located, making their home a few miles north of Vassar in Tuscola County. James and Phebe had five children: an infant son (April 1849 – October 1850); Joseph (October 1850 – 1852); John George (April 16, 1852 – January 1935), who married Evelyn (Crittenden) Gaunt; Mary Elizabeth (February 22, 1854 – December 24, 1908), who married Evert Hobart; and Phoebe “Phebe” Gaunt (May 6, 1856 – January 1934), who first married J. William Tuck, and later married William French. There is also a Gaunt family monument on this lot.
