Nelson married Adaline C. (Black) Hewes (November 12, 1832 – October 4, 1892), the daughter of Sylvester and Mehitable Black, who were also early settlers in the Vassar area. Both families had lived in Newbury Township, Geauga County, Ohio, prior to moving to Tuscola County, Michigan. Nelson and Adaline had one daughter, Flora A. Hewes, who married Chester E. Cross. Nelson, a sergeant in the 23rd Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company D, died of disease contracted during his military service. Nelson’s widow Adaline married the widower Sabin Gibbs (October 3, 1823 – March 25, 1905), a son of Joel and Elizabeth (Root) Gibbs of Benson, Rutland County, Vermont. Sabin was also an early Tuscola County settler, having moved to Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, Michigan in 1847, and then to Tuscola County in 1851. Sabin’s first wife was Harriet (Watts) Gibbs by whom he had three children. Sabin and Adaline had no children.
