TUSCOLA COUNTY Memorial Report By Townsend North Your card of invitation to be present at the meeting in Lansing, on the 7th inst., is received. Replying to same must say, as I expect to be absent for the State at that time, on business, I must forego the pleasure of meeting with you. The secretary of our County Pioneer Society has furnished me with the following memorial list of deaths of pioneers in this county for 1881, including 1882 to June 1st. * Hervey Harringon, Vassar. * B. F. Holland and wife, Vassar, both buried same day. * Edwin Ellis, Tuscola, the first settler in the county. * Ebenezer David, Tuscola, the second settler in the county. * Electus B. Harrison, Tuscola. * David P. Hinson, Fair Grove; said to be one of the oldest Masons of the state. * Mrs. James Luce, Fair Grove. * Jonas Belknap and wife, Juniata. * John Chamberlain, Juniata. * Mrs. Olive Rowland, Juniata. * Frederick Schultz, Denmark. * Wm. Wilcox, Denmark. * King Allen, and Sarah, his wife, Unionville. * David Clark, Unionville. With regards to the pioneers of Michigan, I am Yours, truly, T. Buell French, died about November 30, 1885. Charlotte French, died about December 39, 1885. Alford Tivy, died about January 8, 1886. Ira Tappon, died about March 5, 1886. Mrs. Hannah, died about March 9, 1886. Granny Gunnell, died about April 27, 1886. William Ayliffe, died about May 2, 1886. Nathan Potter, died about May 6, 1886. All of these were early pioneers in this county. Their ages ranged from 56 to 82 years. MICHIGAN PIONEER COLLECTIONS Vol. 11, 1887 Nathan Potter, of Watertown, died May 6, 1886. Mrs. Almira Jameson, of Caro, died July, 1886. She was 78. Mr. Joslin, of Fairgrove, died November 1886. He was 82. Jonas Spalsberry, of Almer, died November 1886. He was 63. John Parsall, of Almer, died November 1886. He was 88. B. A. Wood, of Juniata, died November 1886. He was 79. Henry McPherson, of Millington, died December 1886. He was 53. Moses Maynard, of Tuscola, died January 17, 1887. He was 79. Alexander Gurnsey, of Dayton, died February 8, 1887. Mrs. O. Irons, of Vassar, died February 1887. Mrs. Kenyon, of Vassar, died February 1887. Frederick Schuler, of Arbela, died March 1887. * Eugene Rogers, of Arbela, died March 1887. * David Nettleton, of Caro, died March 1887. * Jacob M. Hoover, of Tuscola, died March 1887. * Mrs. Babcock, of Arbela, died March 1887. She was 89. * Mrs. James Barnes, of Vassar, died March 1887. * Mrs. E. G. Doud, of Vassar, died March 1887. * A. B. Petee. Tuscola County By W. A. Heartt Mary Rutherford - Mary Rutherford died at her home in the town of Juniata, June 10, 1891, aged seventy-six years. She was a resident of the county for thirty-five years; a native of Ireland. Mrs. Betsey Stark - Mrs. Betsey Stark died at her home in the village of Reese, June 1, 1891, aged fifty-one years. She was a native of Ontario. Thomas Clyne - Thomas Clyne died at Vassar, September 25, 1891, aged fifty-three years. He was born in Ontario, and a resident of Michigan since 1863 and of Vassar since 1867. Mrs. Matilda Ellison - Mrs. Matilda Ellison died at her home in Juniata, October 14, 1891, aged fifty-seven years. A resident of Juniata thirty years. Daniel Cram - Daniel Cram died at Woodland, Maryland, October 30, 1891, aged sixty-two. He was buried in Almer cemetery, November 4, 1891. Henry Decow - Henry Decow died at Vassar, December 14, 1891, aged seventy-seven years. He was a resident of the place for thirty-two years. Louis Richards - Louis Richards died at the home of his son in the town of Juniata, December 23, 1891, aged eighty years. A resident of the county since 1856 and a native of Quebec. Marcus Cook - Marcus Cook died at Vassar, while sitting in his chair, January 3, 1892, aged ninety-five years. He was a resident of this county for eighteen years past, having formerly resided at Rochester and Maple Rapids, this State; a man who enjoyed the respect of every one and who at different periods filled many positions of trust and responsibility. Christian Shadley - Christian Shadley, the first settler of the township of Almer, died at his home in Ellington, January 5, 1892, and was buried in the Almer cemetery, aged eighty-seven years. He was a native of Switzerland and came to American in 1833; settled in Almer in 1852. He was a Mexican war veteran, in the regular service for sixteen years, also in the Florida Indian War. dz
