Though Russians by citizenship, they considered their Race to be German. At the age of 4, Erwin, along with his mother and three young siblings boarded the SS George Washington in Breman, German bound for the U.S. Arriving several weeks later (June 10, 1913 @ Ellis Island) and speaking only German, they all set out for SW Michigan to meet up with their father Gottlieb, who had immigrated two years prior and found work in the areas Fruit market. In the years to follow, the family would grow to 12 children, all raised on the family farm in Dowagiac, MI. Erwin spent his entire life as a successful farmer and merchant. On October 9, 1937 he married Marjorie Gribler. Together, they raised 4 children: Larry Eugene, Jerry Douglas, Gary Lee, & Janet Kay; and had 9 grandchildren. Erwin died September 28, 1989. Marjorie Louise Gribler Ruff - daughter of Russell Howard & Elsie (Anderson) - born December 26, 1921 in Toledo, OH. One of six children, including Joan, Naomi, Barbara, Walter & Guerda. Marjorie died August 22, 2004 and was laid to rest next to Erwin, husband of more than 50 years.
