Eleazer Root in the 74th year of his age. The deceased was born in Coventry, Ct., and lived in those days that tried men’s souls, was for a period, in the actual service of his country at the time of the Revolution. He afterwards removed to the state of New York where he entered upon the practice of medicine in Canaan, Columbia Co., in 1788. Here in his practice of 48 years embracing wide and extensive field, he had the pleasure of giving universal satisfaction. It is believed that few men of his profession have enjoyed a large share of public confidence. That he arose to no inconsiderable eminence in his profession may be whom from the fact that for several years he was president of the County Medical Society. In the fall of 1834 he removed with his family into this country, where he entered at once into extensive practice and for skill and through acquaintance with his profession was fast acquiring a reputation surpassed by few, if any. Although he had passed his three score years and ten, he possessed up to the day of his sickness almost the mental and bodily vigor of youth. As to mortality, his character stands irreproachable. In early life he obtained a hope in the mercy of Christ, and had been throughout in the habit of secret prayer, but on his dying bed, to use his own language, had to mourn that he had not made a more public profession of his attachment to the cause of his Savior. Through his sickness he manifested a great deal of composure and a perfect resignation to the will of God. In conversation with him after the hand of death was evidently laid upon him, he remarked that he had no fear in trusting himself in the hands of his Savior, and that he felt to trust and rejoice in him.
