A native of Detroit, Obie along with founding members Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir and Lawrence Payton (d. 1997), the group was originally named 'The Four Aimes' when they started out in 1954 singing at a Detroit party. They signed a contract with Chess Records and then changed their name to 'The Four Tops'. They had no sucessful recordings with Chess Records. February 28, 1956 US Congressman. Elected to represent Michigan's 13th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1947 to 1949. He was defeated for reelection in 1948. In 1910 they opened a large auto parts plant in Hamtramck, MI and supplied auto parts and engines to the Fords Motor Company and the Olds Motor Works. The first Dodge automobile appeared 11/14/1914. July, 1978 Second son of Edsel Bryant Ford I and Eleanor Lowthian Clay, he was at first named Edsel Junior, but re-named Benson, a Hudson family name, his maternal grandmother's maiden name. Easygoing, affable and good-humored, he worked in the Ford Rouge with Henry Ford II, his older brother, until their enlistment after Pearl Harbor. July 27, 1984 Well known and influential minister in Detroit, Michigan and throughout the nation who founded New Bethel Baptist Church where he pastored for 33 years. He was also father of R&B singer Aretha Franklin and is considered to be one of the greatest orators of the 20th Century. Rev. Franklin was known by most of all as "the man with the golden voice." He was lead singer and co-founder of the Detroit vocal group, "The Spinners". They were considered the greatest soul group of the 1970s, with a string of Top 20 hits that included "It's A Shame," "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," "Then Came You" and "The Rubberband Man." They were nominated for six Grammy Awards and became the second black musical group to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They are also members of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Holley Sr., George M. b. 1878 d. 1963 Automotive Engineer and Designer. In 1899, he founded the Holley Motor Company and sold 600 Holley Motorette automobiles between 1902 and 1906. But it was his design of the Holley carburetor that revolutionized gasoline engine development. In 1903 the Holley Carburetor Company produced carburetors for the Curved Dash Oldsmobile. He then became the major carburetor supplier to Ford, Pierce-Arrow, Winton, Oldsmobile and Buick. Holton, DeShaun 'Proof' b. October 2, 1973 d. April 11, 2006 Rap Musician. Also known as Dirty Harry and Oil Can Harry. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he was a member of the popular rap group, 'D12.' The group which usually sang with the likes of Eminem also included the members Swift, Kon Artis, Bizarre, and Kuniva. A longtime friend of Eminem's Proof along with Bizarre was an original founder of the group in 1990. Plot: Rosa L. Parks Freedom Chapel Hudson, Joseph Lowthian b. October 17, 1846 d. July 5, 1912 Department store magnate. More commonly known as J.L. Hudson, as in J.L. Hudson's Deptartment Store, he came to Detroit, Michigan in 1877, opening a men's & boy's clothing store in 1881 at age 35. In 1891, he built an 8-story store in downtown Detroit, which, together with a 1907 addition, was demolished in the 1920s. In 1911, he opened a store on Detroit's main street, Woodward Ave., adding to it between 1925-28 with 16-stories, part of which extended into a 25-story tower. Plot: Section 10 Jamerson, James b. January 29, 1936 d. August 2, 1983 Acclaimed Musician. He was one of the outstanding musicians known as the Funk Brothers who played the music on most every motown hit in the 1960s and early '70s. May 16, 1993 Rock/R&B Singer. Johnson was born Marvin Earl Johnson on October 15, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised on gospel music to the likes of Louis Jordan. In high school Johnson joined a local singing group, and later played carnivals and fairs. In 1958, he recorded his first songs, 'My Baby-O' and 'Once Upon a Time.' Jackson's single didn't fair well but he did get a meeting with Motown Records producer Berry Gordy. Killian, Edwin Henry 'Twilight Ed' b. November 12, 1876 d. July 18, 1928 Major League Baseball Player. He made his major league debut on August 25, 1903, as a left handed pitcher for the Cleveland Naps. Acquired by Detroit in 1904, he won 23 games in his second year as a Tiger. Pitching in the dead-ball era, he was the hardest pitcher to homer against in Major League history and allowed only nine homers in his career. He played his last game for the Tigers on July 15, 1910, with a career 1598 endings pitched, 105-78 win lost record and a 2.38 earn run average. Lucking, Alfred b. December 18, 1856 d. December 1, 1929 US Congressman. Elected to represent Michigan's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1903 to 1905. Also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Michigan in 1924. He was also an attorney. Martin, Lewis Albert b. 1923 d. August 12, 2005 Jazz Musician. Lewis was born in Lawrence County, South Carolina, and moved to Detroit, Michigan, as a child. He attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northwestern High School, where he'd been involved in music playing the tuba and the bass fiddle. He later joined various Detroit area bands, and played local clubs as well as other venues around the country. Playing the bass fiddle, he toured with such legendary jazz artists as Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong Cause of death: Complications of Alzheimer's disease McCree Jr., Wade Hampton b. July 3, 1920 d. August 30, 1987 Respected and revered lawyer, judge and second African-American Solicitor General of the United States (1977-1981). Wade H. McCree, Jr. has been fondly described as "a lawyer's lawyer, a judge's judge, and an intellectual giant, a role model for all in the legal profession. He came from a long line of people determined to have an education despite all difficulties. March 5, 1909 Public Buildings Designer. He was America's most prolific architect of public structures. Elijah E. Myers major design creations consist of three state capitol buildings, Michigan, Texas and Colorado. His first was the Michigan edifice located in Lansing which Myers modeled after the U.S. Capitol. This assignment in 1872 was awarded just after Myers had established his first architectural firm in Springfield, Illinois. Plot: [unmarked] Okubo, James b. May 30, 1920 d. January 29, 1967 World War II Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Medic, Technician Fifth Grade with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team near Biffontaine, France. Under constant barrages of German small arms and machine gun fire, he treated 17 men on October 28 and eight more on October 29, 1944. On November 4, 1944, he ran 75 yards under machine gun fire to reach a wounded crewman of a damaged tank. Parks, Rosa L. b. February 4, 1913 d. October 24, 2005 Civil Rights Pioneer and Social Activist. An African-American working woman, she became most famous for her refusal in 1955 to give up a bus seat to a white man who was getting on the bus, an incident that led to her arrest and inspired Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr to led the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, one of his first Civil Rights actions. He was a member of Gladys Knight & the Pips, which was comprised of Knight; her brother, Merald "Bubba" Knight; and their cousins William Guest and Patten. The friends met while attending different high schools. In 1953 or 1954 they began performing together under the name, 'The Four Aims' later changing it to 'The Four Tops' when they signed to the Chess Record Label in 1956, with the help of Payton's cousin, Roquel Davis, who joined the group as a songwriter. David Ruffin could not capitalize on his first solo singles for various labels, so he shared his private pain in the Temptations' biggest hits. He was an accomplished writer, co-writing many Miracles' songs, as well as songs for colleagues at the Motown label. He co-wrote the hits "My Girl," "My Guy," "Don't Look Back," "You Beat Me to the Punch," and others. He began singing in numerous music groups with members of the Miracles. He was a member of the pre-Miracles groups, the Chimes and the Matadors. Willis, Richard Storrs b. 1819 d. 1900 Songwriter. Wrote melody to Christmas carol "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear." He entered the Major Leagues on July 28, 1959, and played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and the San Diego Padres during his 11 year career. Though starting as a catcher, he switched to a pitcher in 1953 where he won 121 games including a shut-out against the Angels in 1962. In 1968, he played for the Tigers against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. As a batter, he hit over 35 home runs and over 110 RBI's. Winans, Ronald W. b. June 30, 1956 d. June 17, 2005 Gospel Singer. He was the oldest member of what was considered the first family of Contemporary Gospel music that were credited for propelling the medium to secular and mainstream acclaim. Ronald Winans sang on five Grammy-winning albums with his brothers Marvin, Carvin and Michael as The Winans.
