Typed Copy Declaration of British Subjects Detroit, 20 May 1797 Recâ?Td in my office, 31 May 1797 Peter Audrain, Esqr., Prothenetary, County of Wayne Sir: Whereas the Second Article of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce & Navigation susisting between his Brittanic Majesty and the United States of America sti[ulates, â?othat all persons who shall remain there (to wit: Within the Territories of the United States) after the expiration of the said term (to wit: Twelve months after the evacuation of the Posts) without having declared their Intention of remaining subjects of His Brittanic Majesty shall be considered as having elected to become Citizens of the United Statesâ?. The subscribers presuming themselves contemplated under this Article of the Treaty, and in conformity to the stipulation, Do Declare that they have made their Election, which is to Continue and Remain Subjects of His Brittanic Majesty within the Territory of the United States under the conditions of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce & Navigation. The subscribers, Sir, desirous to give the necessary publicity to their declaration and the Treaty being silent on the mode of Communicting their intentions to the Government of the United States, have presumed to address it to you, as an Officer, belonging to a Public Department of the Government; if there be no impropriety, they also wish it may become a matter of record.
