From Unknown Paper, Jan. 10, 1929 From EKU family history file #455 Death Plot Is Laid to Wife Paid Gunman to Kill Estranged Husband So She Would Get Money, Is Charge Camera Catches Crime Detroit, Jan. 10 (.P) -- Denying any knowledge of a plot to slay her estranged husband before he could divorce her, Mrs. Grace M. Wood, 39, charged today with the husband, Ralph A Wood, wealthy builder and contractor, was trying to "Frame" her. Wood's death was said to have been the object of a surprise attack by gunmen at his office in Wyandotte, a suburb, last night. The attack, which was frustrated by police informed of the plot by Cecil Holt, who said he had been engaged by Mrs. Wood to take part in ????? in the death of Ambrose L. Hagerty, 27, one of the prospective assasins, and the wounding of William Dunnigan, a deputy sheriff. Detroit, Jan. 10 (.P) -- A crime that cameras captured was committed in suburban Wyandotte last night when a gunman was slain and an officer critically wounded during a spectacular but unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Ralph A. Wood, head of the Wood Construction Company. Newspapermen and photographers, informed with police that an effort was to be made upon Wood's life, were hidden with officers about the construction company chief's office when the attempted assault took place. They saw a man advance upon Wood with upraised blackjack, and they saw Wood and one of the officers fire almost simultaneously, dropping the attacker. Less than an hour later Wood's estranged wife, Grace, 48 years old, was arrested. Officers sought to question her concerning the story of one of the plotters that she had instigated the attempt upon her husband's life so that she might inherit his estate, said to be large, and become beneficiary of a $100,000 life insurance policy. Early today Taylor Pierce and William Thompson, each 22 years old, were arrested as the two who escaped during the gun battle. Shortly afterward their automobile was found, marked with many bullet holes. The dead man was tentatively identified as Ambrose Haggerty of Wyandotte, Mich. Police learned of the plot thru Cecil Holt, one of the conspirators, who told Roy Smith, chief of police of Riverview, a Detroit suburb, that Mrs. Wood...(I do not have the remainder of the article.)
