January 4, 2009, 6:42 pm Unknown Jan. 3, 1999 KENNEDY, WILLIAM JAMES Age 79, of Livonia (formerly of Dearborn Heights), former head football coach of St. Francis de Sales High School in Detroit, died of pneumonia at Providence Hospital, December 29, 1998. Until his retirement, Mr. Kennedy was a sales representative for Cyril J. Burke, Inc. From 1949 to 1966 he also worked part-time as a football coach, leading his teams to City Championships in 1953 and 1959. He was named Coach of the Year in 1959 and 1961. Mr. Kennedy played football at Northwestern High School for Coach Sam Bishop and graduated in 1938. He went on to play football at Michigan State and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1942. He played for the Detroit Lions during the 1942 season and then enlisted in the Marine Corps and played football on the famed El Toro Marine Service Team during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Lois; a son, Martin Kennedy; his daughters, Dawn Boughal, Christine Mahon, and Colleen Devlin; step-children, Pat Thompson, Bill Welch Jr. and Mark Welch; brother Thomas Kennedy, sister Frances Blass. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annabell Pink Kennedy, in 1993. He has four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends may call at R. G. & G. R.
