He enlisted in the Navy on March 18, 1918, and served on board the Battleship Texas and was drowned while performing his duties, near the coast of Santa Cruse, California. His body was embalmed and on August 31, at 9:45 o'clock, the Chaplain conducted a appropriate funeral service, full military honors being rendered. All officers and men being assembled, the body was then put on ship and sent to San Francisco and buried at Mare Island. The body was later taken up and sent to T. J. Lancaster on November 29th and arrived at Maquoketa on Wednesday, December 3rd. His father H. J. Lancaster lives in Detroit, Michigan, also his brother, Neville Lancaster, now in Detroit. His mother died five years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. J. Kidder from the home with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery.
