Mr. Purcell came to Detroit upwards of 40 years ago and has since resided here. In politics he was an active Democrat and once represented the Eighth ward in the common council. On the death of B. B. Stimson the deceased was elected to succeed him as controller. In 1876 when Stanley G. Wight resigned his position as member of the board of public works Mr. Purcell was appointed his successor by Ex-mayor Lewis. The deceased served on the board until the expiration of the term for which he was appointed, and was succeeded in January last by Mr. Briscoe, Mr. Purcell was an iron molder by trade, and was employed in various foundries in this city during his lifetime. He was regarded as an excellent workman. Personally Mr. Purcell was a genial and agreeable gentleman who was well and favorably known in Detroit; and will leave many warm friends to mourn his unexpected demise. The deceased was 62 years of age and leaves several children. His wife died a little more than a year ago.
