SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT

Sunday morning Stephen SMITH, the well known boot and shoe dealer, died suddently at
his residence, 
No. 254 Lafayette avenue. He had been in robust health up to the very time he was
stricken, and his 
death was one of the most sudden that have occurred here in a long time.

Mr. SMITH was of English birth but had resided in Detroit since 1837. He was in
business with A.C. 
McGraw, first as a clerk and subsequently as a partner, until 1853. He then went
into business for 
himself and continued actively engaged therein ever since. He was a genial, social
man and had many 
cordial personal, as well as business, friends.
