TORREY DIES IN HOSPITAL Widely-Known Citizen, With Home at Royal Oak, Expires Native of Warren, Was Keenly Interest in Union School Alumni With the death Thursday of George G. Torrey, Detroit lost one of its oldest and most substantial citizens and Michigan Agricultural College one of its first alumni. Mr. Torrey was nearly 80 years old, and died after a week’s illness at Grace Hospital Thursday morning. He had lived for the past few years at Royal Oak. Born in Warren, Mich. in May 1837, he came to Detroit and attended the Marcy- Barstow school, one of the first union schools built in the country and the first to fly the Stars and Stripes. Mr. Torrey was a pupil of Mr. Marcy in the “fifties” and organized the old classmates 14 years ago. Each year the pupils of Mr. and Mrs. Marcy held a reunion and banquet and as secretary, Mr. Torrey kept the organization together. He always took the keenest interest in this organization although he repeatedly refused its presidency offered by his old classmates, among whom were Charles H. Little, Frank L. Talor, and T.L. Backus. Mrs. Sarah Hobson, president secretary of the association voiced the sentiment of the classmates that they will be at a loss to proceed without him. Mr. Torrey was one of the first graduates of Michigan Agricultural College and attended the alumni reunion in 1915. He intended to attend this year’s reunion also. After graduating, he taught school for some years near Pontiac, but returned to Detroit, where he worked for the C.H. Little company for 35 years. He is survived by a brother, O.D. Torrey, Goodman, Mo.; one daughter , Miss Mabel Torrey; two sons, Fred and William G. Torrey of Seattle, Wash.; by a niece, Mrs. Leonard Porter of Pittsford, Mich., and by a grandson, Russell Torrey. Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending word from William Torrey in Seattle. Additional Comments: There is a photo in the obituary. The obituary was found in a book belonging to his neice, Lena Stiff Porter, who was raised by her Uncle George and his daughter Mabel Torrey.
