Gay (Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit Michigan Wayne County) Opened in 1846 with land purchased by subscription, the original grounds were forty-one acres. Planners incorporated the ideas of Frederick Law Olmsted in this informally landscaped cemetery. The stone gateway at Croghan cost $6,000 when it was built in 1870. By the time this picture was taken in 1880, there were 21,000 bodies interred. Many famous Detroiters are buried here including General Russell Alger, Governor Lewis Cass, and George DeBaptiste, organizer of the U.S. 102nd Colored Infantry.
