DEPEW Additional Comments: Hazen Stuart Pingree, "Ol' Ping"(b. 30 Aug 1840 in Denmark to Jasper Pingree and Adeline(Bryant)Pingree) (d. 18 Jun 1901 of peritonitis, in England while returning from an African safari with his son. He married Francis A. Gilbert in 1872. They had three children, Hazen Stuart Pingree Jr., Hazel H. and Gertrude. He was Republican. He served in the Union Army in the Civil War; boot and shoe manufaturer, a cobbler by trade; Mayor of Detroit MI,(Potato Patch Pingree) 1897-1900; Governor of Michigan, 1897-1900. Noted for many achievements in Michigan, a statue of Pingree standing was erected in Grand Circus Park in Detroit commemorating him as "The Idol of the People". His body laid in state for two days at Old City Hall and was decked with mourning bunting and banners reading, "Ambitious", "Brave", "Energetic", "Fearless", "Staunch", "True" and "Untiring". The line to pay respects stretched for 6 blocks. He was first interred at Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit and re-interred in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit Michigan in Section 14.
