TRAVERSE CITY — Carmen F. Bonebrake, 87, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 21. Carmen was born on April 23, 1919 in Flint, the daughter of the late Carlton Stevens and the late Dorothy (Bigger) Stevens. Carmen lived in the Grand Traverse area most of her life. She graduated form Central Michigan University and has master's degrees from the University of Michigan and Michigan State. Carmen married the late Nelson Johnston on Jan. 31, 1941. They were united in marriage for almost 50 years and had two loving children. She was married to the late George Bonebrake on Feb. 8, 1997 in Traverse City. Carmen was an active member of the Grant United Methodist Church for most of her life. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Sherman Chapter for 50 years and was a past matron three times, was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #402 in Mesick and was past president of Rebekah Assembly of Michigan. She was a member of the Interlochen and Mesick Women's Clubs. In 1976 Carmen was named "teacher of the year" for region 15, and she was the past president of the Missaukee MEA. When Carmen was not teaching or involved with her clubs she enjoyed extensive travel throughout the country. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton D.and Dorothy D. Stevens; husbands Nelson Johnston and George Bonebrake; and brothers Ronald and Donald Stevens. Friends may call the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. A Rebekah and Eastern Star Service will take place at 7 p.m. A celebration for the life of Carmen will be at the Grant United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m., with Pastors Carl Greene and Jim Breithaup officiating. Interment will be at Sherman-Mesick Cemetery in Mesick. Memorials may be directed to The Grant United Methodist Church and Munson Hospice. Published in the Record-Eagle on 11/23/2006.
