What caught my eye was the name, Treasure Alma Williams, age 90. I moved on to the rest of the paper, but kept thinking about that name. I couldn't shake the image that took form of a couple bending over a bassinet in the early 1900s, so overjoyed at the birth of a tiny daughter that it was the only name they could imagine giving her. It turns out that mental picture is not far from the truth. Treasure Alma Williams was born near Boone. She grew up in the Boone and Mesick areas, where she met the man who was to become her first husband and the father of her children - Earl Teall. He was working at the hardware store in Mesick then and it became their bread and butter, for 30 years. Daughter Mearlyn, of Lansing, said the family lived in the back. "We grew up in that hardware store," she said. Mearlyn said Treasure was named after a friend of her grandparents who had the same name. "They had lost a set of twins before she came, and they lost another set of twins after she came, so she was her dad's treasure, that's just the way he felt, I'm sure," Mearlyn said. Over the years, the name set her mother apart. "No one believes me when I tell them what her name is," Mearlyn said. "It's like, 'Treasure what?' And I'll say, well, Treasure is her name. "She was just so used to it. But I know that her cousins, they just roll that name around, they love it." Treasure lost Earl in 1972. She went on to marry Don Williams, an old friend who had lost his longtime spouse. He died about 10 years later. At Treasure's funeral, Pastor Jack Conklin of the Mesick and Harrietta United Methodist churches used her name as the theme for the eulogy. He'd known her five years and observed that her name couldn't have been more apt. Treasure was active in the local Golden Agers senior citizens group. She knitted mittens for the church's annual holiday Mitten Tree, donating 80 pairs last year and leaving a bag of finished mittens her son Jim Teall will be turning in, already made for next Christmas. She also made doilies that drew top dollar at family reunion raffles. "She's one of those unique individuals that I think her name very much fit who she was," Conklin said. "I don't think I ever heard her say an unkind word about anybody. She was always smiling, always ready to pitch in and lend a helping hand, even if her health was the worst." In the eulogy, Conklin said, "I have no doubt that Treasure has received her treasure. I also have no doubt that there are many in heaven commenting today on how much she is like her name. She was, is, and always will be, a Treasure." Said her son Jim, "She was just a special Ma." Want to read more of Kathy's columns?
