Bates Wm. J. Bates was born in New York state December 13, 1844, died February 26, 1913. He was 68 y, 2 m and 13 d at time of death. He leaves a wife, one son, W. E. Bates, two sisters and a brother. His army record is as follows: He enlisted the 18th day of October, 1861 as a corporal, Company I, 1st reg. Wis. Inft. Vol., being mustered out with his company the 13th day of October 1864.
