Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Joe Hall The Jan Dunnewold Family ** The Jan Dunnewold family arrived in Benton County May 3, 1869 after commencing their voyage on April 7th from Rotterdam by way of Hull and Liverpool, England, New York, St. Paul and Sauk Rapids. Jan, son of the Police Chief, was a native of Winterswijk, Holland located on the Dutch/German border. In Holland he owned and operated a tannery. He married Johanna Willems Feb. 8, 1861 and they had four children at the time the emigrated. The family took up temporary residence in a house in Sauk Rapids which they had rented for $6.00/month, while Jan set about locating farm land to buy. He initially purchased 80 acres in Section 23 of St. George Township for $5.00/acre becoming a grain farmer. He moved the family into a shanty on the property on June 2nd. On Aug. 18th he homesteaded property on Section 22 by the lake, where they located the family home, moving in on Nov. 19th. Jan applied for U.S. citizenship on September 14, 1869. He took an active role in the community being elected treasurer for School Dist. 9, and the Grange as well as the Township Board. Jan was born November 14, 1827, died November 27, 1894. Both are buried in the Benton County Cemetery, Sauk Rapids The children of Jan and Johanna are: i. Gerhard Hendrick Dunnewold b. Oct. 27, 1861 Winterswijk, Netherlands ii. Alida Johanna Dunnewold b. Apr. 14, 1863 Winterswijk, Netherlands iii. Judith Johanna Dunnewold b. Mar. 31, 1865 Winterswijk, Netherlands iv. Christina Hendrika Dunnewold b. Feb. 19, 1867 Winterswijk, Netherlands v. Johan Philip Dunnewold b. Mar. 4, 1870 St. George Township, MN Alida Johann Dunnewold was my fraternal great grandmother who married Alphonse Henry, who had emigrated from Belgium with his family, on Oct. 12, 1880. From their marriage were born nine children, the second oldest Nancy B. Henry married George Allen Hall and had six children the youngest being Donald Alphose Hall, my father. ** The Dunnewold family genealogy has been traced back to the year 1510.
