Dropsy and other diseases attendant upon encroaching years had to do with hastening the end. Peter Rau was born in Germany, June 27, 1835, and when a little boy of eight or nine years moved with his parents to Canada. For many years he lived near Stratford, Ontario, and there grew to manhood and married the patient wife who still survives him. In 1881 Mr. Rau decided to leave Canadian soil for American, and in that year he came to Minnesota and took up a farm in Benton county, where he thereafter resided and reared his large family. Ten children, whose names follow, survive: Mrs. G. B. Dunnewold, St. Cloud; Mrs. Frank Messenberg, St. Cloud; and John, Philip, Henry, Adolph, William, Leon, Elizabeth Rau and Mrs. Jos. Latterel, all of St. George Town. The funeral is to be held on Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from St. Patrick’s church at Minden and Rev. A.J. Kittowski, pastor of St. Bridget’s church at Foley will be the officiating pastor. Interment will be made at Minden. Mr. Rau would have been seventy years and one month old had he lived a day longer. The end, however, had not be altogether unexpected, as the deceased had been failing rapidly of late. Nearly all the members of his family were at home when the grim reaper came. Condolences are extended the bereaved relatives. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily Journal, Wednesday 26 July, 1905, p.3 PETER RAU PASSES AWAY One of Benton County’s Estimable Farmers Dies of Bright’s Disease In the death of Peter Rau, whose demise occurred at the family home in the town of St. George, Monday evening at 5 o’clock, Benton county loses one of its oldest and most estimable citizens. Although he had reached the advanced age of three score and ten, he had enjoyed excellent health up to a few weeks ago and gave promise to be spared for several years to come. Six weeks ago he was taken down with bright’s disease and failed steadily from that time. The deceased was one of the well known farmers of St. George where he had resided continuously since 1881. He is survived by his wife and ten children, to whom the sympathy of their many friends will be extended. The children living at home are: John A., Phil, Henry, Adolph, Leon, Willie and Miss Elizabeth; Mrs. Jos. Latterell and Mesdames G. H. Dunnewold and Frank Messenberg of this city. Mr. Rau was born in Germany, removing when a boy to Seaport, Canada, where he remained until coming to Minnesota. He was much respected by all who knew him and a most valuable citizen. The funeral will be held from St. Patrick’s church in the town of Minden Thursday morning at 10 o’clock. ============== NOTE: There was also an obituary printed in the German language paper of St. Cloud but since I could not read it, I did not print it. ========================================================================= Copyright Diane Brown 2007.
