A. Engdahl Died August 20 This community was called upon to mourn the loss of one of its most highly respected citizens when, on Tuesday morning, August 20th, Rev. A. Engdahl, was called to his heavenly reward after a long and useful life, a large portion of which was spent in doing good among the people of this community. Rev. Engdahl was born in Mangshog, Varmland, Sweden September 3rd, 1842, and after receiving his education served as professor of schools in Sweden until coming to America in 1867. He attended Augutana [sic] College and Theological Seminary from 1867 until 1872, and was ordained as a minister of the gospel in the Swedish Lutheran Church at Galesburg, Illinois, on September 29th, 1872. From 1872 to 1875 he served as pastor at Cambridge, Minn. He then moved to Milbank, South Dakota, where he was placed in charge of the Mission District comprised of Big Stone county, Minnesota, and Grant, Brown and Marshall counties, South Dakota. He served in this capacity until twenty-three years ago last June, when he came to Ortonville to serve as pastor of the Swedish Lutheran church here and at Clinton, continuing in this capacity until about three years ago when he was compelled to resign his charge on account of ill health. During his residence here Rev. Engdahl, by his conscientious work as pastor, his thoughtful kindness toward all with whom he came in contact, and the ever active interest which he took in all things tending toward the up-building of the moral life of the community, has so endeared himself to the people of Ortonville and vicinity, irrespective of religious affiliations, that his taking [continued on page 6] away leaves a vacant place in the community which will be difficult to fill. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Ecklund Engdahl, three daughters and three sons, as follows: Mrs. C. E. Shaleen, Langford, S.D., A. G. Engdahl, Kenmare, N.D., T. N. Engdahl, Van Hook, N.D., Lieut. F. W. Engdahl, Camp Humphrey, Va. and Naoma and Irene, who are still at home. All of his children were with him when the end came, except Lieut. Engdahl, who arrived from Washington, D. C., this afternoon to attend the funeral. The remains will lie in state at the Swedish Lutheran Church, which he had served so faithfully and well for more than twenty years, from 10:00 a.m., until 2:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23rd, and the remains will be laid at rest at Milbank, S.D. Dr Matsen of Cannon Falls, and Rev. Monten of Wheaton, will have charge of the services and will be assisted by district pastors from nearby charges. J. L. Erickson, J. H. Erickson, and Martin Erickson of Clinton, John Carlson, C. Hasslen, and Alfred Johnson of Ortonville will act as pall-bearers.
