Arthur Herbert Hamann was born Oct. 22, 1931 to W. C. and Meta (Koehler) Hamann at Big Stone City, SD. He was baptized in St. John's Lutheran Church south of Big Stone City and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church at Ortonville. Arthur began farming with his dad at a very young age and continued helping on the family farm until January 16, 1951 when he left for Camp Rucker, AL to serve his country In 1952 Art started farming independently in Ortonville, and also managed the local locker plant. On October 15, 1954 he was united in marriage to Marlys (Conraads) in the Methodist Church at Big Stone City. The couple was blessed with three sons throughout their marriage: Paul, Timothy, and Jerrod. In 1962 Art moved to a larger farm near Beardsley where he farmed before moving to manage another locker plant in Browns Valley. In 1965 Art moved back to Ortonville and started working for the city – a job he held dear to his heart. In the years to follow, Art served in various positions at Trinity Lutheran Church, including usher and head usher for 50 years. Two years as Property Manager, Church Recorder for five years, and Elder. Art retired as Electrical Superintendent for the City of Ortonville in December 1998. Mr. Hamann passed away, Thursday, April 27, 2000 at Ortonville, reaching the age of 68 years 6 months and 5 days. In his early years, Art enjoyed trapping, fishing and hunting. As years progressed, he was blessed with the ability to pass these interests on to his children and grandchildren. Other interests included playing softball and managing various teams to go on to many wins. Art's managing experience did not end here, but also included managing the roller rink at Sioux Historic. He will be remembered for many things. His cheerful attitude and random acts of kindness had a large impact on those whom he would meet on a day-to-day basis. Many will remember him as the man with an ear to bend, and a soft spoken work of encouragement and comfort to give out to others. Survivors include his wife Maryls of Ortonville; three sons, Rev. Paul Hamann of Victoria, Timothy (Sharon) or Oelwein, IA. And Jerrod of New Castle, CO; three grandchildren, Joshua, Amy and Matthew; a sister, Elda (Martin) Schmidt of Ortonville; a brother, Lorance (Bonnie) of Zap, ND; three sisters-in-law, Frances Conradds and Evely Dailie of Milbank, SD and Gail Johnson of Ortonville; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
