Schmidt May 6, 1916 to October 4, 2002 Martin Schmidt Martin Schmidt was born on May 6, 1916 in Big Stone City, SD to parents John and Emilie (Fredrickson) Schmidt. Martin was confirmed on May 20, 1934 at the First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. Martin attended school in Lac Qui Parle County, school district #105. In 1936 Martin graduated from Ortonville High School. On February 19, 1943 Martin entered the military at Ft. Snelling, MN, and was discharged on February 28, 1946 with the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and a Victory Medal. Martin moved to his grandparents farmstead when he was 8 years old. This farmstead has been occupied by the family for the past 100 years. On April 18, 1954 Martin was united in marriage to Elda E. Hamann at the Trinity Lutheran church in Ortonville., MN. Martin was a school bus driver for the Ortonville School. He also worked for Johnson Lumberyard, and Strege Auto Parts. Martin was a member of the American Legion Post #97 in Ortonville for over 50 years and was Legion Commander for a number of years. On October 4, 2004 Martin F. Schmidt passed away in Fergus Falls, MN reaching the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 28 days. Survivors include his wife, Elda; four daughters, Nancy Cordell of Watertown, SD, Linda (John) Dornon of St. Paris, OH, Lisa Schmidt of Aberdeen, SD. and Lynn (Patrick) Wettstone of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren, Samira Cordell, Anthony Cordell, Jamison Cordell, Ethan Dornon, Erin Wettstone and Brian Wettstone.
