Clementine Whitcomb was born August 18, 1853, in Hawkesbury, Ontario [Canada]. Her mother, Margaret Cameron, was Highland Scotch. Her father, James Whitcomb, was the grandson of a New York stone mason who came to Canada to work upon the parliament building in Ottawa. When a child of three, she came with her parents to a farm near Hustisford, Wis. She attended the Waterton Academy. She taught school in her own neighborhood and in Carson City, and in other mining towns in Nevada. Sept. 19, 1883 she became the wife of Fredrick Randall Lovell, the son of John and Rosamond Lovell, old friends and neighbors in Dodge county, Wis. Immediately following their marriage, they came to Garden City, Minn., moving the following year to the farm at the edge of Vernon Center [MN], which was their home for more than 50 years. Here her children were born: Margaret, whose death occurred June 19, 1937; John of Fairmont [MN] and James of Kasson [MN]. Mrs Lovell was an unselfish and devoted wife and mother; the soul of hospitality and kindness. She was active and a leader in church and community work and a loyal member of the W.C.T.U. from its earliest organization. Her husband [Fred R. Lovell] preceded her in death by nine years. After several years of failing health she passed away at the home of her son, James, at Kasson, Monday, Oct. 10 1938, at the age of 85. Surviving her, besides her two sons, are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Vernon Center Wednesday, Oct. 12, at two o'clock. Rev. W. M. Frank, pastor, preached the funeral sermon. Miss Florence Brown sang two solos. There were many flowers. [She is buried in the Vernon Center Cemetery.] [Information in brackets added by the transcriber - William W. Porter on 11 January 2002]
