MAGGIE NUTT LAID TO REST ON FRIDAY LAST WEEK Mrs. Ed Nutt passed away at the hospital on February 5, 1946 at the age of eighty years. For the past forty years she has been associated with the local hotel, having operated it alone since her husband's death in 1927. Margaret Riley was born in Cleveland, Ohio, February 18, 1866, the daughter of Dennis and Bridget Riley. She was the last surviving member of a family of twelve children. At the age of two years, with her parents, she came to Minnesota. Mr. and Mrs. Riley and family settled in Butternut township, having purchased land from the railroad. Margaret Riley spent her early life on this farm, which still remains the property of the family. After attending Norman [sic] in Mankato, Margaret Riley taught the home school for a few terms. Later she assisted her brother Pat in the general store in Lake Crystal, which the latter owned and operated. In 1893, she was united in marriage to Ed Nutt of Lake Crystal. To this union two daughters were born: Pearle, now Mrs. L. E. Thomson of Mankato, and Lillian May, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Nutt purchased the Commercial hotel in 1905 and operated it until the former's death in 1927. From that time until January 1, 1946, Mrs. Nutt successfully managed the business, making a host of friends and acquaintances. Funeral services, which were in charge of James Brothers Funeral Home, were held in Holy Family Catholic church, February 8 at 9 a.m. The Rev. John Daly of Mankato offered Requiem Mass. J. Brinley Jones of Mankato sang "Panis Angelicus" at the offertory. Interment was in the Lake Crystal cemetery. Pallbearers were George Slattery Edwin Williams, H. C. Johnson, George Champlin, Thomas Owens and Norman Nelson. Survivors are her daughter Mrs. L. E. Thomson of Mankato; her grand-daughters, Patricia Thomson, a student at Iowa State college at Ames, and Barbara Thomson of Mankato, and five nieces, Mrs. J. Brinley Jones, Mankato; Mrs. Rose Farr, Mendota; Mrs. Raymond Kolling, Mankato; Mrs. Rudolph Hoffman, Mankato, and Mrs. A. J. Jamison, St. James. Many other relatives and a large number of friends, many from Mankato, attended the impressive funeral services. Mrs. Nutt will long be remembered by the writer as a true friend.
