Lake Crystal Union; March 3, 1915 Another Old Settler Has Gone Merritt Nutt who for the past 35 years has been actively engaged in business of various kinds in this place, passed away at the family residence on East Humphrey street shortly after 5 o'clock on the afternoon of February 23. He was born in the town of Floyd, Oneida County, N. Y., March 6th, 1847. His boyhood years were spent on the farm in this county, and at the age of 17 he enlisted in the 111th New York Infantry August 23rd, 1864 and went immediately to the front. He spent the fall and early winter in front of Petersburg until he was taken sick and sent back to Alexandria, Va. Here on the 9th day of June 1865 he was discharged. He came west to Illinois the fall of 1865. In 1866 he moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He was married July 5th, 1867 to Miss Abigail Trimble who survives him. Four children were born to this union. Ed, Frank and Mrs. M. J. Barney of this place and Charles who resides at St. Paul. The sickness contracted while in the service left him in a weakened condition from which he never recovered. He possessed a disposition of energy and ambition rarely seen in men in the full health and vigor of life. He never complained of his affliction, but was always busy making improvements on the various properties he owned. About 20 years ago he opened the first real estate office in this place and was the first to advertise our farm land, and a great many people were induced to locate here through his influence. In his death this city has lost one of the most enterprising and public spirited citizens for he was always ready to give financial and moral aid to any enterprise or industry that presented itself. The funeral was held from the home Thursday afternoon, the interment taking place in Lakeview cemetery.
