HENRY KNEES - July 1940 Death came to Mrs. Henry Knees, nee Rosa Gareis, after a brief illness last week. She died the night of the Fourth of July at the Union hospital where she had been only tow days. Her death was due to a gall bladder attack. The deceased was a daughter of John Gareis of Milford. She was born November 2, 1862. Her mother's maiden name was Fredericka Backer. She came to America with her parents from Seibelsdorf, Bavaria, Germany, when she was 11 years old. The family settled in Milford when the families who had been scattered by the Indian Uprising were returning to their homes. She grew to womanhood there among the pioneers and April 5, 1894, she married Henry Knees, a widower with a son Armin, now living at Guthrie in Northern Minnesota. They lived after their marriage on a farm in Milford about 2 miles south West of Essig, on the old Sleepy Eye road. Two children were born to the union, a son Valentine who died in 1927 and a daughter Meta, now Mrs. Frank Gleissner of New Ulm, with whom Mrs. Knees has made her home since the death of Mr. Knees in December of 1937. The deceased was a member of a large family and she leaves several surviving brothers and sisters. They are Fred Gareis of South Gate, Calif., Mrs. Margaret Peuschel of Lakeview, Minn. Mrs. Bertha Sprenger, New Ulm, John Gareis of Milford and Mrs. Fredericka Wiedemann of Sleepy Eye. Those who preceded their sister in death were Mrs. Martha Magnus of Webster, S.D., Maggie, who died at Santa Monica, California last year, and Mrs. Susanna Lehmann who also died in California about five years ago. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Knees Monday afternoon from which the local Friedens Church of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid of the Church. Interment was in the City cemetery. Among those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Alfons Sprenger of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Magnus, Walter Magnus and daughter and Mrs. Oscar Magnus of Webster, S.D., Mrs. Paul Wiedemann, Mrs. Carl Schwieger, Miss Nita Wiedemann, Miss Lizzie Roberts and Mrs. W.C. Albrecht of Sleepy Eye and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Heimann of Fairfax and Mr. and Mrs. Haverland and the former's father, Mr. Erickson of Lakeville, Minn.
