He had been ailing for some time and it was thought that an operation would relieve him, the complaint being, obstruction of the bowels. The physicians advised against it, giving but little hope of recovery in either case, but he and his children felt that there was a chance and they were willing to take it. He failed to recover from the operation. He was buried Sunday afternoon in the city cemetery, the services in connection with the funeral being held in Turner hall, conducted by Fred Pfaender with the assistance of the Maennerchor, both in the hall and at the grave. There was an abundance of beautiful wreathes and other flowers, among them being wreathes from the Mozart Club and the Turnverein of St. Paul. A large concourse of the old friends and neighbors of the deceased as well as those of the family were present to pay their respects to the memory of the deceased. Mr. Petry was born in Alzey, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, in 1832, and came to this country in 1850 locating in the east where he lived for fifteen years and where he was married, his wife dying a few years after the marriage leaving but one child, Philippine Boelter. He came to this city in 1865, where he met and married Mathilda Buggert, and there were eight children born to this union; Arthur and Robert of St. Paul and Eduard, Henry, Armund, Hulda and Ida of this city and Emil, who is located on a farm near Boyd. All of the children are living and have reached the estate of manhood. Mr. Petry was a carpenter by trade. He was a careful, conscientious man in the city followed that trade. He was a careful, conscientious man in all of his dealing with his fellow citizens and was respected by all who knew him, a kind-hearted father and a genial and agreeable neighbor. His love of music led him to be sought for in the early days for all functions in which there was required something of this nature and he was a member of the New Ulm Maennerchor and an active and faithful member of the Turnverein, under the auspices of which he was buried.
