STRATE August S. Strate, life-long resident of Brown County, died at his home at 226 North Washington Street in this city Friday morning at 1:30 o'clock as the result of injuries sustained in a fall the evening before. Mr. Strate had been struck by the limb of a falling tree seven years ago while he was living on his farm in West Newton township, and as a result of the accident lost the use of one eye. A year later he lost the vision of the other eye and when afflicted with blindness, his family moved to New Ulm to make their home. Since that time his wife had been his constant companion. Thursday evening about seven o'clock Mrs. Strate went down to the basement. Mr. Strate must have followed her, for as she was starting up the stairs she was met by Mr. Strate who was sliding down the stairs head first. She caught his head before it struck the cement floor and tried to raise him up. She found he was not breathing and she called to him and shook him to try to get him to answer her. By that time other members of the family had called the doctor and neighbors and as Mrs. Strate worked frantically with her husband's arms, she noticed him breathing again. He was carried upstairs and when the doctor arrived he was found to be suffering from a fracture at the base of the brain. His death occurred several hours later. The deceased was born in West Newton township on June 30, 1863 and was thus past 65 years old at his death. He grew to manhood in West Newton township and was married there on January 17, 1901, to Miss Emma Haenze, Rev. Miller of the Methodist Church performing the ceremony. Five children blessed the Strate home, all of whom remain with the mother to mourn. They are: Roy Strate, and Lee Strate of New Ulm; the Misses Ada and Leona Strate of St. Paul and Miss Muriel Strate still at home. One grandson, his aged mother, Mrs. Fredericka Strate, who made her home with the deceased and his family, and the following three brothers and three sisters also survive; Fred Strate, Arlee, Sask., Canada; Wilbur and William Strate of New Ulm; Mrs. Rudolph Alwin, New Ulm; Mrs. Louis Arhart, West Newton and Mrs. Herman Juni, Milford. Funeral services were conducted from the family home Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and fromt he Methodist church at 2:00, with Rev. J. W. Mettam of Mankato, former local pastor, Rev. A.K. Harkness of LeSueur assisting Rev H.F. Ackermann, local pastor. Interment was made in the City cemetery.
