Carlson, 81, Barnum, died peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2006 in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. Victor was born on Nov. 22, 1924 in Cloquet to Albert and Sevia (Peterson) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Mahtowa and later in Barnum. In 1943, Victor was drafted in the United States Navy and served with the Sea Bee's during World War II in the South Pacific where he helped build the airstrip that the atomic bomb was flown on. Following his Honorable Discharge, Victor lived in Minneapolis and worked for Western Electric until moving back to Mahtowa. On Oct. 1, 1949, Victor married Betty Rilea in Mahtowa where they lived until purchasing a farm in Barnum Township. In 1955, Victor began working at Diamond Match in Cloquet where he worked for 31 years retiring in 1986. Victor and Betty continued living in Barnum Township until 1996 when they moved into Barnum. Victor was a very active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa. He will be truly remembered for the gift he had to communicate with children and the love which he gave them. Victor was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers: Emil, Virgil, Alvin, Clarence, Lawrence, and Paul. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years; Betty; three sons: Wayne (Karen) of Cromwell; David of Barnum; and Paul (Teri) of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters: Myra (Greg) Class of Mahtowa and Heidi (Paul) Appicelli of Winona; a brother: Donald (Gail) Carlson of Billings, Montana; 17 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. VISITATION:5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2006 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake and continue from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday, July 3, 2006 in the Barnum United Methodist Church. Pastor Karen Linne and Phil Swensson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Salem Cemetery, Mahtowa with Full Military Honors accorded by the Carlton VFW. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Staff at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet for their loving care and compassion.
