Mr. Smith had gone to a meadow to burn some grass and failing to return or see anything of him for a couple of hours, the family became anxious and his son, Leo, went out in search of him and found the body. Whether he was in the act of stooping over to light a fire or was stricken and fell over, no one knows. He was lying upon his left side, life apparently having passed out without a struggle. Peter Smith was born in Athens County, Ohio, April 9, 1848. He came to Carver county in 1867 and homesteaded 160 acres of land five and one-half miles north of Norwood in Camden. This country was then but a wilderness, inhabited almost entirely by Indians and wild animals of the time. Their first home was a log cabin. He entered the virgin timber, felled the trees, cleared up his land and raised a family of fifteen children. He worked hard, knew only faithfulness of a husband and father, he prospered and became one of the leading figures of our country. His home was on this farm 58 years. He was married to Adeline Daily in 1868 and together they witnessed the transformation of a wilderness into one of the most densely populated sections of our state. His wife died in 1886 and he was married to Katherine Mantel in 1888. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Kowalke of Long Prairie died in 1909, also a son, Aaron, who died in infancy. Those of the children who survive him are: Jake Smith of Excelsine, Mrs. Phoebe Bennett of Maple Plain, Mike Smith, and Mrs. Tiny Daily of Minneapolis, Mrs. Sarah Kirkpatrick of Norwood, Mrs. Lucreta Grayen of Williston, N.D., John and George Smith of Hines, Mrs. Lena Goodrich of Aceley, Mrs. Lizzie Coghill of Jordan, Leo Smith who resides on the farm, Mrs. Martha Segler of Bird Island, and Mrs. Mamie Donney of Glencoe, forty-four grand children and five great-grand children. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Daily, Mrs. Craven, and Mrs. John Smith. The funeral which was held on Monday, was largely attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends.
