Original clippings & microcopies of the following clippings are currently in the possession of Ann P. (nee McRoden) Mensch in Fort Wayne, IN. The original clippings & a great many family records were originally preserved by Marthia LaPerl (nee McRoden) Harrison who was the daughter of Mary Ann (nee Norman) & William Cunningham McRoden. Marthia's son, Charles Harrison Jr., graciously gave a great deal of Marthia's family tree collection to the transcriber, Ann, who is also a descendant of Mary Ann & William (Ahnetafel #s 8 & 9 to Ann). The following is Mrs. Mary Ann McRoden's obituary from an original newspaper clipping believed to be the "Montevideo American" newspaper for Thursday, Mar 24, 1955: "Mrs. Mary Ann McRoden, County Resident For 83 Years, Dies March 19" "Mrs. Mary Ann McRoden, a resident of Chippewa county for 83 years passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gail Anspach in Montevideo on Saturday, March 19. Mrs. McRoden had been in ill health for the past six weeks and her death which came at the age of 84 years, was caused by infirmities of old age. Born on April 8, 1870, at Rock Dell, Minnesota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Norman she came to this community at the age of 2. On September 30, 1891, she was united in marriage to William C. McRoden at Montevideo. Eight children were born to this union. Mrs. McRoden was a lifetime member of the Rosewood Methodist church and for many years was active in the W.C.T.U.** She leaves to mourn her passing seven children: Mrs. William Pavlicek (Anna) of Katy, Tex.; Mrs. Gail Anspach (Ruth) of Montevideo; Mrs. Joseph B. Crowley (Joy) of Mitchell, S. D.; Andrew McRoden of Estherville, Ia.; Mrs. Charles Harrison (Martha)* of Candor, N.Y.; Paul E. McRoden of Montevideo; Mrs. Raymond B. Hoginson (Effie) of St. Paul and one brother, William T. Norman of Montevideo; one aunt, Margaret Densmore of Montevideo and 26 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away on Feb 21, 1948; one daughter, Mrs. William Rohs (Eliza); two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday March 22, at 2:00 o'clock from the Anderson Funeral Home. Rev. John R. Miller, pastor of the Methodist church officiated at the services and burial was at the Sunset Memorial cemetery. Pallbearers were Eldon Rohs, Floyd Norman, Maurice Norman, Lyle Norman, Irvin Olson, and Leland Olson." *Ann's note: Mrs. Charles Harrison's correct name is Marthia LaPerl (nee McRoden) Harrison. ** W.C.T.U is The Women's Christian Temperance Union. The following is William Cunningham McRoden's obituary transcribed from an original newspaper clipping in the possession of Ann P. (nee McRoden) Mensch. This clipping had been carefully preserved by his daughter, Marthia LaPerl (nee McRoden) Harrison. "Montevideo (Minnesota) American" for Friday, Feb 27, 1948: "Wm. C. McRoden Resident of Havelock for Over 58 Years" "William C. McRoden, 85, passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gail Anspach her Saturday at 1:30 a.m. Last rites were conducted by Rev. John Walker at the Anderson chapel and the Methodist church here Wednesday afternoon this week. Born April 2, 1862, at Hamilton, Canada, he was a son of Wm. C. and Anna McRoden. He was married to Mary Ann Norman in 1892** and the couple made their home on a farm in Havelock township for 58 years. They moved to the Anspach home in Montevideo just two and a half months ago. Besides his wife, Mr. McRoden is survived by their seven children: Mrs. William Pavlicek (Anna), Mrs. Gail Anspach (Ruth) and Paul McRoden, Montevideo; Mrs. J. B. Crowley (Joy), Mitchell, S. D.; Andrew McRoden, Estherville, Iowa; Mrs. Charles Harrison (Martha)*, Candor, N. Y.; and Rs. Ray Hoganson (Effa), St. Paul. Twenty-five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Krebs, Laporte, Iowa, and Mrs. Eliza Lampkins, Lyman, Wash., also survive. A daughter, Mrs. William Rohs, passed away in 1927, and two grandchildren, six brothers and four sisters have also preceded him in death. During most of his early years, Mr. McRoden lived with his grandparents. At the age of 14 he went to Hershey, Mich., where he worked at lumbering for seven years. After that he was a workman helping to build the St. Louis and Great Northern railroad into Watertown and later came to this part of Minnesota where he helped build the Bensel and Stuart Bridges. Pallbearers at the funeral service were Paul and William McRoden, Eldon Rohs, Dale McRoden, and Marvin and Cleon Pavlicek. Out of town relatives here were Andrew McRoden and family, Estherville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hoganson, St. Paul; Ms. Elmer Gutgesell, Henry, S. D.; and Mrs. Vincent Higgins, Mitchell, S.
