Butenhoff came to this country from Iowa and farmed near the town of Baker. Clarence is the second to the youngest of 9 boys and 2 girls. As a young boy going to a country school, he received the nickname of "Mutt." He doesn't remember how or why or by whom this handle was laid on him, but he has had it ever since. Although, he still will answer to the name of Clarence. In June, 1939 he married Ellen Erickson from Fargo. They moved to their present farm in 1941. They had the usual assortment of farm animals, cows, horses, pigs, chickens and at one time or another even had turkeys, ducks and sheep. Clarence farmed and raised grain and potatoes. Eventually all that was left in the way of livestock were chickens, cats and a dog. Then the chickens left and they were busy with just grain and potatoes and two girls, Shirley Ann, who was born in 1946, blue-eyed and blonde and Beverly Jean with her brown eyes and brown hair, who was introduced to the world in Nov. 1948. Shirley went two years to country school then to Barnesville thru all the grades, graduating from High School; then going to the University of N. Dak. To earn her B.S. in Nursing. From there she went to Calif. And received her M.S. She married Dr. Neil Scott in 1971: they are now living in New Orleans where she is going to Medical School at Tulane U. Beverly also went to the Barnesville schools and graduated from there. She went to M. S. for about three years but that wasn't her thing so she went to work. She learned to operate a PBX and that is what she is doing in Huntsville, Ala. She and Clay Kaufman were married in 1971 and moved to Huntsville, where they are buying a home. Back on the farm, Mutt has retired and rented out the land, sold the machinery and is going back to fishing. ========================================================================= Copyright Don Hansen 2006.
