He was educated in the McCabe School and the Parochial School at Sabin. He served in the Army during World War II. On June 7, 1941 he married Alice Rawalt of Missoula, Montana. Alice graduated from Fargo High School and attended Interstate Business College. An interesting incident happened in 1838 when Major Jonas Rawalt (Alice's great-grandfather) was challenged by Abraham Lincoln in wrestling. Jonas was the only one who could throw Lincoln. He was 34 years old at the time and Lincoln was 29. Alice and Butch farm in Barnesville Township raising grain and potatoes. They belong to Trinity Lutheran Church at Sabin, Minn. Butch belongs to the Barnesville Rod and Gun Club and the American Legion. Alice belongs to the American Legion Auxiliary. Both are members of the Elks and Eagles Lodges. There are two boys in this family, who farm with their father. Dennis, born Dec. 14, 1946, graduated from Barnesville High School, attended N.D.S.U. and Wahpeton School of Science, joined the National Guard, and lives at home.
