FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Don Hansen Submitted: June 2006 ========================================================================= Clay County Family Album A History of Rural Clay County, MN, 1976 MELVIN BUTTENHOFF FAMILY Melvin Buttenhoff, the oldest son of Carl and Mathilda Buttenhoff, was born July 2, 1923, on a farm near Baker. He attended a country grade school, Sabin Church School and Barnesville High School. He enjoys hunting, fishing, golf and reading. He also enjoys working in his shop. During World War II, he served as 1st Scout with the Army. While in the Pacific he was wounded three times and contacted malaria. His discharge came in December, 1945. On October 26, 1946, Mel married DeLores Carlson, daughter of Leonard and Delia Carlson in the Clara Church at Comstock. DeLores was born in 1928 and attended grade and high school in Comstock. Along with her parents she lived with Grandpa and Grandma Carlson. She learned to speak Swedish before English. Grandma taught her a Swedish song which she sang in church at the age of four. DeLores was active in Luther League, sang with the church choir and a quartet. She is past president of the Clara Ladies Aid. After their marriage Mel and DeLores lived in Fargo, N.D. where Mel was employed at Consolidated Freightway. Their daughter Peggy Jean was born in 1947. In the spring of 1948 they moved to Mel's parents' farm to help out, after his parents and brother were hurt in an auto accident. In 1949, they bought a house in Comstock and moved there. Mel worked on a farm and at the Comstock School for five years before returning to Consolidated Freightways in 1955. DeLores also worked two years at the school, three years at the grocery store. In the fall she was weigh master at the Comstock Beet loading station for 10 years. After living in Comstock for fifteen years, they moved in the spring of 1961 to a farm near Barnesville. It was formerly occupied by his parents and then George Buttenhoff and family. Mel and DeLores purchased the home quarter in 1963. Grain, soybeans, ducks and a few cattle along with various dogs and cats were raised. Later the land was rented out. Melee is in his 20th year with Consolidated as a transport operator. They continue living on the farm. Peggy Jean was educated at Cosmetic Grade School, Burnsville High School and graduated from Moorhead State College. She is presently teaching as a music specialist at the Turtle Mountain Community School at Belcourt, N. Dak. She was active in Luther League, Church Choir and Bible School. While in school she was in band and chorus. Her hobbies are reading, playing piano and singing. Peggy worked at Log Haven Resort three summers, before she started teaching. Everyone in the family likes to fish both winter and summer.
