In 1915 my father returned to Nebraska and was married to Nettie Loveland Weeks. They came to the Edgerton, MN area to begin farming. In 1922 they settled in Pipestone County. My father and his brother-in-law farmed for a while together, and then when my parents were married, they farmed separately. My sister, Ida May, was born while my family lived near Edgerton. My brother, John, was born in Murray County. I was born at Frazee, MN, in Becker County. During a three-year interval my family spent in northern Minnesota. My sister, brother and I went to school at District 14 in Rock Township. My brother and I attended high school in Woodstock. All three of us graduated from Pipestone High School. After graduation from high school, I was in the Army and spent the last three years of my service in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper. My brother was killed in June 1944, during the invasion of Normandy. In June 1946, I was married at Durham, NC to Elizabeth Warlick, daughter of Marvin Lee Warlick and Sarah Ferrell Warlick, whom I met while stationed at Camp Butner, near Durham, and we moved on a farm west of Woodstock. Our oldest daughter, Sara, was born at the Pipestone Hospital in June 1947, as was our son, John, in November 1948, and Nancy in November 1950, all while we lived at Woodstock. Sara and John started school at District 32 there. From Woodstock we moved in 1954, to a farm east of Ruthton, which we had bought in 1952 and on which we lived one year, moving to the Holland area in 1955. We transferred our membership from the Woodstock Presbyterian to the Ruthton Methodist Church, and John and Sara attended the school in Ruthton. At Holland we joined the First Presbyterian Church, and we now had three children in school. Deborah was born in August 1956; Rae in June 1962, and both went to school in Holland until consolidation with Pipestone. All five graduated from Pipestone High School and John and Deborah from the University of Minnesota. Our family participated in 4-H, in the Presbyterian Church, in which I have served as elder and in which my wife has been active in choir and Sunday School. I have been on the Holland Elevator Board, have been a soil conservation supervisor and have been on the school board in District 32 and on both the Burke and Rock town boards. Our daughter, Mrs. James Heard, lives at Edgerton and has three children: Tammy, Jim and Jason. John and his wife, Judy (Long), live on a farm near Holland with their two children, Michael and Karen. Nancy, Mrs. Jose Ortega, lives at Chula Vista, CA. She has one son, David. Deborah and her husband Rick Axelson, live in Tucson, AZ, and attend the University of Arizona. Rae is a junior at the University of Minnesota at Morris. We have lived on our present farm for 20 years and expect to end our farming career here. ========================================================================= Copyright Don Hansen 2006.
