My grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Watts and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Long, lived on farms north and east of the city of Pipestone. All their children were raised and educated here. John's paternal grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Rens Oldemeyer, were born in Nebraska and Wyoming respectively, met and married in Nebraska and eventually settled in the Woodstock area. John's maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Warlick, lived in North Carolina. My parents, Mr. And Mrs. Verne Long, met while attending Pipestone High School. After graduation my father began farming with my grandfather while my mother went to nurse's training in Minneapolis. They were married March 21, 1948 and have lived ever since on the original Long farm started in 1921. They raised three children: Judy, Kathy and Jim. John's parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Oldemeyer, met in Durham, NC in 1943 while David was stationed there in the Army. They were married in Durham June 8, 1946 and then began farming in the Woodstock area. They raised five children: Sara, John, Nancy, Deb and Rae. John and I were both born in Pipestone. His birth date is Nov. 28, 1948 and mine is Feb. 27, 1949. We attended various country schools in the county before entering Pipestone High School. We both graduated from Pipestone but didn't actually meet until 1967 while we were attending the University of Minnesota, Morris. John received an agricultural degree from the University in St. Paul in 1970 and I received a degree in Spanish from the University in Morris in 1971. He worked in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area before coming home to farm in 1972. I taught Spanish and English in Adrian, MN for three years. Our family was formed when we were married Sept. 15, 1973, in Pipestone. We began farming northwest of Woodstock. Between 1973 and 1983 we lived on three different farms in the area. On Dec. 6, 1976, our first child, Michael James was born in Pipestone. Our daughter, Karen Elizabeth, was born Jan. 19, 1980, also in Pipestone. John continued to farm and I began substitute teaching in the Pipestone and Ruthton schools. In January 1983 we moved to the former Edwin Weatherly farm southeast of Holland and began purchasing the building site. John raised hogs and grain on the land that we own and rent. We attend the Presbyterian Church in Holland, MN, where John is an elder and choir member and I am assistant organist. John is also the Rock Township treasurer and is a member of the Pipestone County Extension Board. Presently I am employed on a part-time basis at the Pipestone County Courthouse. ========================================================================= Copyright Don Hansen 2006.
