G. Butenhoff, passed away at her home Saturday night, Jan. 11, 1936, after a brief illness of scarlet fever and complications. She was born July 3rd, 1919, attended grade school near Baker, was instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran church school at Sabin; later she entered high school in Barnesville and at the time of her death was enrolled as a senior. In addition to her parents, she leaves three sisters, Matilda, Cecelia and Avis, and three brothers, Arnold, Luverne and Lawrence. Due to the nature of the disease, a private committal service was held Sunday afternoon in the Lutheran church cemetery, conducted by Rev. P. Schumm. She devoted most of her time to books and was a brilliant student. She will be greatly missed in her home. Memorial services will be held some time in the near future in the Sabin Lutheran church, of which Irene was an active member during her brief sojourn here. I'm but a stranger here, Heaven is my home; Earth is a desert drear, Heaven is my home. Danger and sorrow stand Round me on every hand Heaven is my Fatherland, Heaven is my home. What though the tempests rage? Heaven is my home; Short is my pilgrimage, Heaven is my home. And time's wild wintry blast Soon shall be overpast, I shall reach home at last; Heaven is my home. There at my Savior's side, Heaven is my home. May I be glorified, Heaven is my home. There are the g.... and blest, Those I love most and best, Grant me with them to rest, Heaven is my home. Assembly The passing of Irene Butenhoff has again reminded us of the brevity of our earthly sojourn. It was a week ago last Monday that we resumed our school sessions in a new year and then Irene answered the roll call here. The next day she became afflicted with the illness, which together with complications closed the earthly chapter in the existence of this young friend of ours and she was called to answer to the roll call of her creator. Irene had endeared herself among us. She was loved by parents, brothers, sisters and many friends. To these her leaving has brought great grief and despair, and likewise in no small way it left a sad impression upon those who knew her even less intimately. We are at times like this left in a state of bewilderment to explain why so young a person should be called away, just as she was about to complete one phase of her education and to take up another of more specific training. But, we should not feel that way. Irene has not lived in vain despite the fact that her stay was short. Unquestionably Irene has given much to her parents, her brothers and sisters. The relationship they enjoyed with her, have, I am sure, given them many satisfactions that have or will make their lives more full. Those things did not pass away with her going. Many of the virtues and traits of character which you as young people are cultivating or are striving to develop, and which we your teachers and which your parents would have you attain were possessed by our departed friend. She was a loyal friend and student. She was respectful, honest, and true. Industrious and ambitious had I found her in the short time I knew her. Patient, friendly, and helpful like the good Master, she always seemed to be. Hers was the aim to always do the right thing. Nor because of these traits that I have mentioned did she forget to be normally human. She enjoyed a good time, played young people will and should and was usually happy. Last Saturday evening, however, the Angel of Death touched her and bid her follow - her work on earth was done. I am sure that could Irene speak to us now she would want to say - "Carry on, strive to do right, to be kind, and good, and generous." And to her parents, her sisters, and brothers, and other loved ones who must feel heavily her departure, we say, "The Lord gave, the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord. P. J. Hanson, Supt. and Teacher. In a note from Mark Peihl, of the Clay County Historical Society, "Irene Butenhoff's date of death was particularly hard to find. Her death is recorded in Clay County, Inexplicably, under the name 'June Freda Butenhoff.' The Minnesota Historical Society's online index to deaths recorded by the state health department lists her as 'Irine Freda Butenhoff'" Mark is the person who provided me with her obit.
