BUTENHOFF RITES HELD Leonard "Butch" Butenhoff, 83, Fargo, North Dakota, formerly rural Barnesville, Minnesota died Thursday, January 20, 2000 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. Funeral service was held Monday, January 24, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, Minnesota with Pastor Daniel Wagner officiating. Rosemarie Johnk served as soloist accompanied by organist Anne Morris. Pallbearers were Brady Butenhoff, Blaine Butenhoff, Paul Butenhoff, Amber (Butenhoff) Anderson, Adrian Haugrud, Lee Skistad, Alvin Hansen, Mary Yohnke and Theodore Butenhoff. Visitation was held Sunday, January 23, 2000 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. in Dobmeier Funeral Home, Barnesville and two hours before at the church. Interment is in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Rural Sabin. Leonard, known as Butch was born March 27, 1916 on a farm near Baker, Minnesota to Albert and Emma (Mahl) Butenhoff. He attended county school and grew to manhood in the Baker area. He farmed with his family and on June 7, 1941 he married Alice Rawalt in Fargo. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army where he served with the military police during WWII, guarding German prisoners of war among which were members of the SS. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to the Baker area where he and Alice made their home on the Butenhoff home place. Butch farmed and 1948 they built their home and established a farm northwest of Barnesville. He continued to farm until his retirement in 1980. They continued to live on the farm until October of 1999 when Butch became a resident of Bethany Homes in Fargo. He lived there until the time of his death. Butch was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin and was baptized and confirmed there. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and always took pride in his home and lawn as well as his cars. He is survived by his wife, Alice, of rural Barnesville; two sons, Dennis (Linda) Butenhoff of Baker and David (Joan) Butenhoff of Lake Lizzie near Pelican Rapids, MN; four grandchildren, Amber (Butenhoff) Anderson of Pendelton, OR, Brady Butenhoff of Fargo, ND, Blaine Butenhoff of Moorhead, MN and Paul Butenhoff of West Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers, Carl, Fred, Willie, Albert, Clarence, Theodore, Buck and Ed; and two sisters, Evelyn Sether and Luella Carr. ========================================================================= Copyright Don Hansen 2006.
