TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. H. C. BUTENHOFF RUN OVER BY HER FATHER'S AUTOMOBILE - MR. BUTENHOFF WAS BACKING OUT OF GARAGE AND LITTLE GIRL CAUGHT UNDER THE WHEELS - PARENTS BOTH PRESENT WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED - FUNERAL WILL BE HELD AT BAKER TOMORROW AFTERNOON - SERMON WILL BE PREACHED IN SIGN LANGUAGE AS PARENTS ARE DEAF AND DUMB. Baker was the scene of a shocking tragedy Tuesday evening when Ruth Edna, the 2 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Butenhoff was crushed to death by her father's automobile. The accident occurred at the Butenhoff home about 7 o'clock. Mrs. Butenhoff and little Ruth were standing by the garage waiting for Mr. Butenhoff to back the automobile out. As the machine emerged from the garage, Mrs. Butenhoff started forward to get into the car. The baby, instead of following her mother, ran behind the car while it was moving and wash crushed under the wheel. So terrible were her screams that Mr. Butenhoff heard them in spite of his deafness. He stopped the car before the front wheel touched the body, but it was too late. Life in the tiny body was almost extinct when the agonized mother and father lifted it gently from under the car. The funeral will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Selzmer of Minneapolis will preach in the sign language of the deaf and dumb. Rev. F. C. Ahrens of Sabin will conduct the service in English. The sympathy of an entire community goes out to the bereaved parents. Both are seriously affected by this awful tragedy. Moorhead Weekly News Thur., 6/22/1916 BUTENHOFF BABY BURIED TODAY. FUNERAL OF LITTLE GIRL KILLED BY AUTOMOBILE TUESDAY EVENING. (From Friday's Daily) The funeral of Ruth Edna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Butenhoff, was held at the home in Baker this afternoon. The services were attended by a great many friends of the family. Two sermons were preached, one in the sign language by Rev. Seizner of Minneapolis, the other in English by Rev. Ahrens of Sabin. Word reached The News today that Mrs. Butenhoff witnessed the accident but was too far from the machine to save the baby, her lack of the power of speech preventing her from screaming to her brother who was in the car with Mr. Butenhoff. ========================================================================= Copyright Don Hansen 2006.
