Obituary Clay County Herald, Hawley, MN, Mar 16, 1906: DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS: Fritz Almquist died at his home in this village Monday morning, March 12, after a year and half's struggle with that dreadful and almost incurable disease, consumption. During this period he lived in the open air a good share of the time but the tubercular germs had gained so strong a hold of his system that he was gradually brought to an untimely death. Mr Almquist was born in Sweden October 26, 1863. His father was a merchant and his parental home was one of culture and refinement. He came to America when a lad of 14 together with his brother August. Another brother, Frank, had previously come and settled on a homestead in Parke Township, Clay County, and it was to this home that the two boys made their long journey. Deceased lived on the farm about two years and then noved to Hawley where he remained a resident to the time of his departure to the great beyond. The departed was married to Ellen Olson at Hawley, June 4, 1890. Rev. O. M. Smith Officiating. To this union were born one boy and three girls, namely, Alvin, Lyla, Charlotte and Leona, who together with the mother survive him. He is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, one brother and one sister still residing in Sweden. His brother Frank is still a resident of Parke Township. Mr. Almquist was a kind and faithful fusband, father and citizen. His willingness to lend a helping hand was one of his foremost characteristics. He never entered into business by himself but he always held good positions in the business circles of the village and was at the beginning of his sickness head bookkeeper and buyer for the firm of Rittemad, Eid & Co. He was a musician of more than ordinary ability and was a skilled violinist. A program composed of local talent was scarcely ever thought complete without a selection from his violin. He was the organizer of the present Hawley Cornet Band and its leader until physical weakness caused him to resign. Mr. Almquist was truly a useful and diligent man. The funeral was held yesterday [Mar 15] from the Lutheran Church. Rev. S. G. Hauge delivered a very comforting sermon which included a strong appeal to prepare for the better land. Messrs. Dodge and Eide, Mrs. Halvorson and Miss Hammett sang three pretty quartet selections. The service closed with the ritual ceremony of the Odd Fellow order of which the deceased was a member. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The remains were interred in the Hawley Cemetery. The sympathy of the community goes to the bereaved widow and children.
