FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Judy Clarke Submitted: March 2005 ========================================================================= Arend Haken was born on November 7, 1919, in Ransom Township, Nobles County, Minnesota to John and Trientje (Tena) Jacobs Haken. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 12 School. Arend farmed with his family in the Rushmore and Dundee areas. In 1941, the family moved to a farm west of Slayton and he continued to farm with his parents and brother Garrit. Arend retired from farming in 1978, but continued living on the farm. Arend helped his nephews, Bruce and Branch. On January 31, 2005, he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Communities of Windom, MN and passed away there on February 28, 2005, at the age of 85. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Slayton. Arend enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching football and baseball. Survivors include two sisters: Gertie Bruns, Slayton, MN; and Tena Swan, Hadley, MN; five brothers and their spouses: Garrit and Blanch Haken, Forest Hill, LA; Hugo Haken, Slayton, MN; Bill Haken, Worthington, MN; Tony and Joyce Haken, Windom, MN; and Marvin and Jesse Haken, Eagle River, AK; sister-in-law Minnie Haken, Worthington, MN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Dick, George, John and Henry Haken; two half brothers: Ben and Menno Haken; four sisters-in-law: Georgie, Dorothy, Annie and Betty and two brothers-law: Ted Bruns and Louie Swan. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church, Slayton, MN at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, with the Rev. David Erickson officiating. The organist was Nola Aanenson. The pallbearers were Bruce Haken, Branch Haken, Gordan Swan, Richard Swan, Dale Bergman and Tim Haken. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN.
