He was 20 years old when he arrived in the US on Jan 27, 1858 having left the port of Havre on the ship, Morning Star, traveling Steerage. He was a Farmer. Here is the arrival report (New York Times, January 27, 1858) Arrived New York, January 26 Ship Morning Star (of Boston,) [captain] Foster, Havre, 31 ds with mdse and 114 passengers to [agents] Crosby, Crocker & Co. From 1st to 10th January, in lat 46 lon 23 had constant heavy gales from W.S.W to W.N.W., was most of the time under close reefed maintopsail; have been since as far south at lat 30. [Latitude 30 is approximatelty the latitude of Jacksonville, Florida so the ship was certainly blown far south] -------------------------------------------------- According to the ship manifest he came alone in 1858. He appears on the Wisc. 1860 Census a single man, labor. Then in 1861 he enlisted in the Wisc. Cal. as a Bugler. According to his pension he was out in 1865 and then married a Mary Siebold b. Mass. her father, George Siebold was from Germany as was her mother Barbara Frederica Prince. They married on the 2nd of November 1865 in Greenfield, Wisc. Jacob and his wife soon moved to MN. Ten months before he died Jacob became a citizen. On his papers it simply says, he was from Germany. On two census records it says he was from Prussia. Jacob Schuck, enlisted on the 5th of November 1861 in Bugler Co. J 1st Wisconsin Cavalry as a private. Duties: Bugler for the Union. He was honorably discharged on March 7th 1865. While in the service he was injured (It doesn’t say what battle) in his right hand and dull of hearing in left ear. He had “pain in left hip and thigh extending up into back, side, arm and neck. . . . Dull of hearing left ear. Received an injury to right hand in army - This hand gets lame so he can not use it.
