W. Harmer received a message Saturday that his brother, John, was dead at the home of his daughter in Walla Walla, Wash. The remains accompanied by his son, John Harmer, of Waseca, arrived here on the 3:38 passenger Wednesday afternoon and funeral services were held this morning at 10 o'clock in the Methodist Church with the interment in Riverside Cemetery beside his wife who died several years ago. Mr. Harmer was one of the pioneers of Dodge Co.. Obituary next week." (Source: Dodge County Star Thursday, June 2, 1921, page 1) JOHN HARMER "John Harmer was born in Sussex County, England, April 17,1843. When he was a lad of 9 years, his parents crossed the big waters, bringing their family of ten boys and girls with them to the United States, finally settling in Wisconsin, where seven other children were born. At about the time of the Indian Outbreak in 1865 the family moved to Minnesota Lake, but soon went to Pine Island, where they lived but a short time when he came to Dodge County, settling on the farm, five miles west of Dodge Center, that was for so many years his home. On November 24, 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Swam, who passed to the great beyond, February 17, 1909. To this union three daughters and one son were born. They are as follows: Mrs. Nora McMartin of Moscow, Idaho; Mrs. Mabel Rockford, of Rockford, Washington; Mrs. Hope Root, of Walla Walla, Washington, and John D. Harmer, of Waseca, Minnesota, all of whom were present at the bedside at the time of his death. There are also left to mourn, seven brothers, Thomas, Hilltop, Colorado, William, Minneapolis; Herbert and Jesse of Northfield, Richard, of Santa Anna, California, George, of Dodge Center, and Albert of Claremont, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Crown, of Markesan, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Jennie Lynch, of Dodge Center, besides a large number of other relatives. He died May 28, 1921 at the home of his daughter at Walla Walla, Washington, at the age of 78 years, 1 mo. and 11 days. The body arrived here Wednesday afternoon and funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Thursday forenoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Irwin, and the body laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. Relatives from away who were in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John D. Harmer and daughter, of Waseca; Mr. and Mrs. William Harmer, of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Harmer, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Harmer, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ellingboe, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Cowell and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Harmer, all of Northfield; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Harmer, and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harmer, Claremont; Dennis Swam, of Milaca and Orph Green, of Byron."
