Introduction to Land record Indexes fro towns in Fillmoe Co., MN This data is from the GENERAL LAND OFFICE CD for "Pre-1908 Homestead & Cash Entry Patents" from the U. S. Bureau of Land Management. There is missing data as many parcels of land are missing. Also acres of land is sometimes listed as 0 which likely means that no information was available. This information was extracted by Township (101N-104N) & Range (8W-13W). Sumner and Carrolton Townships are slightly larger than the other townships so, to avoid confusion, some of their land is listed in the adjoining township. As an example, there are two section 6s in Carrolton. The east section 6 is listed in Holt Township. "Location" is the location in the section. The secret to read the location is to start from the back. Two examples, an 80 acre piece in the S1/2 of the NE1/4 is listed as S1/2NE and a 40 acre piece in the NE1/4 of the SW1/4 is listed as NESW. Note that these land records show the 1/2 but not the 1/4. There is more information on the CD that may be of interest that is not included such as the Land Office (Brownsville, Chatfield, Jackson, etc.), the sale date (often a year or two after the land was settled), and the type of sale (homestead or cash). For this information go to the "Pre-1908 Homestead & Cash Entry Patents" under Fillmore County Look-ups and Volunteers. For more complete information there is a record of the first land owners at the land record office in the Courthouse Building at Preston.
