William Henry2 Adler, born June 22, 1869 in Redwing, Goodhue Co., Minn.; died May 11, 1931 in Penticton, B.C. Generation No. 2 2. William Henry2 Adler (John1) was born June 22, 1869 in Redwing, Goodhue Co., Minn., and died May 11, 1931 in Penticton, B.C.. He married *Nellie Frances Halstead November 30, 1893 in Mandan, N.D., daughter of *George Halstead and *Livona Burdick. She was born June 9, 1870 in Cresco, Howard Co., Iowa, and died September 20, 1951 in Paradise Hill, Sask. Notes for William Henry Adler: Copy of cemetery Plot in file. Grandma and Grandpa Adler were living in Oliver at the time he took sick and died. I remember hearing rumours that he had a leg amputated.??? Grandma then returned to Paradise Hill were she lived with Aunt Florence until she passed away in 1951. Grandpa and Grandma Adler arrived in Canada May 3, 1914. Naturalization took place in North Battleford, Sask. (I have a letter stating date of naturalization) More About William Henry Adler: Burial: ,Penticton, B.C. Notes for *Nellie Frances Halstead: Grandma Nellie and Grandpa Adler came to Canada from the US through Sask in 1912 ? Grandpa became a naturalizaled Canadian Citizen 1914 They farmed at Paradise Hill at the Adler Homestead (later became the Winder Homestead) just east of Paradise Hill. They moved to Oliver B.C. sometime in the late 20's as Grandfather died in Penticton B.C. on May 11, 1931. The story as I recall hearing is that he was a big man well over 200 lbs. and that he had diabietas and had his one leg amputated... he however died from the results of all. There is no marker for his grave. Grandma moved back to Sask. when I am not sure and was living in her house on what is known as Walter Avenue in Paradise Hill when she died. I remember her sitting by the window in her chair... what she was doing I cannot remember maybe looking out or sewing? I recall her being a nice loving kind lady. I was only 7 when she died so my memory of her is next to nill. Wish that letters from her father etc and other family members had not been destroyed. Notes for Frederick Arthur Adler: Uncle Fred operated a store at Iron Springs, Sask, I remember him having the store in Paradise Hill. He wore glassses but only needed them for close work as I recall him looking over his glasses whenever anyone came into the store... It was an old fashioned store with the big round pieces of cheese.. and of so many other things, bolts, nuts, clothes, just everything. He also played the big bass violin... oh how I used to love hearing the deep strumming of it. I remember as a man who was very kind to me in fact he spoiled me as I recall. More About Frederick Arthur Adler: Burial: Union Cem, Paradise Hill, Sk Notes for Marion Longsberry: Aunt Marion ran and operated the telephone exchange in Paradise Hill for many years. That is where I (Janice Adler) got my first training for the telephone so when I arrived in Calgary in later years I applied and received a job at AGT. My Uncle Mutt (Marshall Winder) helped her also. I don't recall Aunt Marion ever working in the store with Uncle Fred. After Uncle Fred died and she retired some years later her daughter moved her to a nursing home in Calgary,Alberta and that is where she passed away. I remember her saying she missed the prairie.... that she really did not like the bush.... Often wondered about that but I never asked any questions to find out why as she was born in Scotland... maybe it was in the wide open spaces of Scotland that she loved and that's why she loved the prairies. I remember going to visit at Aunt Pearl and Uncle Tom's farm in Cutknife. We travelled at night so they must have been up for a day and had to get back and I was lucky enough to go for a visit. She had a parlour... we were not allowed in it unless it was to dust. I remember being there and the minister came and she took him inn there for tea... was I ever in awe.. I believe the piano was in there also so Marilyn must have been allowed in there to practice. I know Uncle Tom was a very quite man. Notes for *Leslie John Adler: Submitted for the Family Reunion Booklet 1987 by Audrey Parker and Janice Pashulka Les was born on March 8, 1905 in Mandan, N.Datoka. He imigrated to Canada with his parents in 1912. Les was an avid baseball fan, first playing the game in his early years and then acting as an umpire. He worked as a painter building elevators and farmed. 1987. Les was a painter at the Cold Lake Air Base when it was being build . He used to tell the story of how he was up on a ladder painting a window when a jet flew over and the noise was so sudden and loud that he just about fell off the ladder. Another story that he told about when he was in Cold Lake was being in a bar in Grand Centre when this fellow that he knew casually asked him if he would like to come for a ride in his new car to Cold Lake town. Dad said why not. ... O h oh the car was stolen... it took alot of explaining when the RCMP s topped them and he was a passenger. I remember asking Dad about where he was born and he used to tell me in Mandan and that when he went out the door to go to school the rattle snakes were so bad that you had to kill them before you could get out of the house.... Sounded good to a little girl.... Dad was a kind man. He was generous to all. I feel that many times over the years he was taken advantage of because of his generous nature. Lend ing money to many who somehow forgot to repay him. Winnie(5) came from Ontario in 1910. She lived at Kilronan. She went to school when her mother taught school. She helped in the Post Office and helped with the work on the farm. On April 20, 1920 she married Thomas Locke. He built the house she still lives in on NW 33 52 2 4 W 3. A daughter Pauline was born on July 30, 1922 (56). Tom died in July of 1923. Their daughter Audrey was born on Nov 6, 1923 Winnie worked in Daily's store in the Post Office and later she was the Telephone Operator. About this time Joe Denham's wife died so she went to Saskatoon to look after his two boys. The Denham family homesteaded in Kilronan.Winnie returned to Paradise Hill, where she married Leslie John Adler in 1938. Les was born on March 8,m 1905 in Mandan N.D. He imigrated to Canada with his parents in 1912. Les was an avid baseball fan, first playing the game in his early years and then acting as an umpire. He worked as as a painter painting elevators and farmed. Three children came to bless their marriage, Guy, Neal and Janice . Les died March 29, 1076 and Winnie still living on the farm. She takes trips here and there to her family in Calgary (Guy and Janice) and Drayton Valley and Edson (Neal and Pauline) . We always say that Mom keeps her suitcases packed so if you say "Let's go," she is the first one out the door. 1992 It was with many hours of careful consideration and thought that Mom finally decided the she could no longer live on the farm by herself. She turned 91 in Nov of 91 and because of her many health problems she made a decision that she would try out the Lodge in Drayton Valley Alberta. On January 15, 1992 she moved into the Lodge. Daughter Janice along with her son Guy had gone to Saskatchewan to the farm to pack some of her personal belongings to take with her to the lodge. Janice asked Mom to think over the whole situation as to whether she could really adjust to the Lodge. Upon returning Jan 29 , Winnie agreed to apply for the Alberta Health Care and thus started her new life in Alberta at the age of 91. Her first 10 years were spent in Ontario. The next 81 years in Saskatchewan and so starts another era of her liv ing in Alberta. She says that she might tryout B.C. when she is 100 . Mother died at 91 years she never made the 100. On March 17, 1992 she suffered a stroke which affected her speech and some memory. She battled with recovering her speech which she did very well but after suffering from a blockage in her right leg she suffered alot after that. When she suffered the blockage on March 29, 1992 the Dr. said their was nothing they could do. Janice asked if they could not try something because once again Mother was fighting. They did try an drug which worked to a certain extend. She remained with us for almost another 2 months but during this time she suffered greatly from pain in her leg and finally she submitted again to pneuonia (spelling ) and died quietly in her sleep that was partially induced by the great amounts of morphin she was on for the pain. Mom has been such a loving person throughout her 91 years - not only as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, but as a daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Her sons and daughters Pauline, Audrey, Guy Neal and Janice gave her joy and she was always there for us when we needed her. The gReat grand children, Scott, Steeffie, Desire and Derry brought her enormous pleasure. A Mother is somewho who holds us close to her heart.. Always ready to guide you with gentle words of encouragement, yet setting you free to find out for yourself who you are land what you want to be. A Mother is someone who dreams great dreams for you, yet accepts the dreams that you decide to follow land will always love you just the way you are. Mother you were special to us all and your gentle words of encouragement and love will be chirshed in our hearts forever. In closing I would like to read this poem which I found in Mom's wallet only a fw short days ago. I Am Free Don't grieve for me, I am free I am following the path God laid for me I took his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh to love, to work to play. If my parting has left a void. Then fill it with remembered joy; A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, All these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish for you, the sunshine of tomorrow My life's been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times,my loved ones touch. Perhap's my time seemed all too brief Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me. God wanted me now. He set me free. Goodbye Mom we love you and will miss you! Vivian Lucille4 Winder (Winifred Halstead3 Adler, William Henry2, John1) was born May 28, 1930 in Turtleford, Sask. She married Nick Stasiuk October 8, 1950 in Knox United Chur, Saskatoon, Sask. Notes for Vivian Lucille Winder: Echoes of an Era. I was born in Turtleford Sask. on May 28, 1930, the first child of Marshall and Winnifred Adler Winder. I have two brothers, Darrel and Lyle Winder of Paradise Hill. Most of my younger years were spent on the farm two miles east of Paradise Hill. Chores on the farm in those days were plentiful, carrying in wood, taking out ashes, feeding chickens, gathering eggs, and bringing in the cows from the pasture. First school I attended was in the present United Church where one teacher taught all the grades. Some winter days were pretty cold in the old school with just an old pot bellied stove in the middle of the room. We always managed to get to school in cold weather, in later years we travelled on horseback or a toboggan and in summer the bicycle was used. On Saturdays I pedalled by bike to Gordon Fair's at Bolony where Aunt Edna gave me my piano lessons. I didn't become a concert pianist but did learn enough to amuse myself. After finishing school I attended business college in Saskatoon. My first job was secretary at the Dept of Veteran's Affairs and later worked in an anaesthetist's office. I married NIck Stasiuk of Melfort,Sask. on Oct 9, 1950 in Knox United Church, Saskatoon. We travelled to Paradise Hill for our wedding dance which was held in Novlan's Hall with Fair's Orchestra providing the music. We made our home in Saskatoon where our three children were born, Bryan, Gwendolyn and Brent. We owned and operated two service stations, Subway Service and Parktown Texaco. and when we sold the stations we bought the Invermay Hotel which we operated for the next 7 years. After selling the hotel we moved to Paradise Hill for a holiday - some holiday! Bought the Shop Rite store and are still at work. Our children, Bryan Marshall marr. Mary Black and have 3 children, Tyler, April and Kristen, Bryan has a plumbing business in Prince Albert, Sask. Gwendolyn Janet marr. Edward Frantik and also have three children, Trevor, Nicole and Amanda. Ed is the Poole Elvevator Agent at Porcupine Hills Sask. Brent Merle marr. Denise Hewitt and operate Gasland Food Store in Edson, Alberta. Our two boys, became enthusiatic hockey players. Bryan the oldest played defence one year with the Yorkton Terriers of the Sask. Junion Hockey League plus Senior Hockey with the Paradise HIll Colts. Brent, a few years younger, became a stalwart on defence as well and the two made sure the opposing players were skating with their heads up.Gwen, after taking a few years of figure skating lessons, stayed with the sport she enjoyed. Being an ardent student she began teaching figure skating in Arborfield, Zenon Park and Porcupine Plain where her and her family now reside. We spent many hours in cold unheated rinks and also travlled many miles to be there. Now there are six grand children that figure ice is the greatest thing ever made. All are either involved in hockey or figure skating - plus music lessons and gmnmastics. Children of Vivian Winder and Nick Stasiuk are: + 31 i. Brian Marshall5 Stasiuk, born April 4, 1954 in Saskatoon, Sask. + 32 ii. Gwendolyn Janet Stasiuk, born June 4, 1959 in Saskatoon, Sask. + 33 iii. Brent Merle Stasiuk, born September 11, 1961 in Saskatoon, Sk. 15. Darrell Eugene4 Winder (Winifred Halstead3 Adler, William Henry2, John1) was born November 28, 1938 in Paradise Hill, Sk. He married Shirley Deanna McClellan, daughter of Robert McClellan and Bessie Craig. She was born July 5, 1942 in Sec.18.-54-23-W3, Sask,. Notes for Darrell Eugene Winder: Info from Echoes of an Era published in 1991 by the Paradise Hill and District Homecoming Committee. I, Darrel Eugene Winder, was born t o Marshall and Winnifred Halsted (Adler) Winder, the second of three children, on Nov. 28, 1937. I was delivered by Dr. Finlayson, assisted by nurse Mrs.O. Olson at Olson's, three years propier to Paradise Hill's first hospital,I was raised the first 7 yrs. on our farm two miles east of Paradise Hill located on t he SW 1/4 -36-52-24. In 1944, we moved into the village of Paradise Hill. Dad rented a house on main street (most recently owned by Mr. and Mrs. Raoul Lemieux) . We lived in this house until Dad built a new house on the West end of Walter Street. All my schooling was taken in Paradise Hill, grades 1-12. My grade 1 2 term was devoted more to interest in cars and activities unrelated to studies. Relating to vehicles, when I was fifteen,Dad bought me a 1929 Model A Ford truck, which he purchased from Tony Palish. Shortly after the truck was delivered, the excited new owner set off down Walter Street on a trial run. I started off in first gear, acceleratged, paused, shifted to second and to my surprise, second gear did not respond. The vehicle rolled to a stop . Puzzled but undaunted, I started off again - first gear - accelerated - paused - sifted to second. There was one hell of a bang and we ground to a halt.Taking a peek under the vehicle disclosed pieces of tranny strewn on the ground and a gaping hole in the side of the gear box. Ho wever, after a month or so of tearing down, locating and replacing the tranny, I gained some trial and error mechanical knowlege, and I was back on the road. While attending high school,I was fortunate to have two part time jobs. I worked for Alex Weir in the drug store for about 2yrs.after school on Tues. and Sat. afternoons.Through the approx. same time period, I operated the movie projectors for Joe and Da Gingras. There were two viewing s on Sat. nite, 7 & 9 and on Mon. at 8:30. Prior to the Sat. nite show , we always played records from the projection room on to the main street to announce that the show was about to begin. I remember one nite before show time I was playing this snappy tune when I heart footsteps racing up the stairs and Mr. Gingras rushed through the door, immed. lifted the arm off the record and replaced it with another. He explained that I had on a adult party record not suitable for the public. I had to smile to myself, but only after Mr. Gingras had left the room. Prior to completing Grade 12 June Exams, Dad talked to a couple of fellows who were working for a seismograph company and the co.happened t o be looking for employees. Dad explained to them that he had a son finishing school and that I may be interested. I drove into St. Wal burg where the co. was working and was interviewed by the Party-Chief , Jack Trotter. I was hired. This was the beginning of a career that lasted 12 yrs. The last 2 being winters only I started working with the recording crew as a jug hustler, then moved up to junior operator.3-1/2 yrs. after I was hired on I was presented with my own recording ruck and crew. This work allowed me to reside in numerous villages, towns and cities in Sask. and Alta. I worked one summer in Montana and 2 summers in Alaska. In the early summer of 1964, I was asked, and I accepted to assist in completing a job in East Pakistan (Bangladesh). From there upon completing, I transferred to marine work on the North Sea working out of Scotland, Norway and finally Holland. Spring breakup of 1968, ended my career with the Co. 12 winters in isolated camps, 2 while married, made it an easy decision. On Feb. 5, 1969, I offically took over the imperial Oil bulk plant formerly operated by the late Manford Nichols. On Aug. 5, 1966 Darrell and Shirley McClellan were married. They moved into a small house on Walter Stree t. (Grandma Adler's old house). For the first 2 yrs. of marriage Darrel was away so Shirley looked after the few cattle and helped at haying time and drove grain truck at harvest. Darrel stayed home the last two yrs but the summer of 1967, Shirley went with him on the job and they lived in Stettler Alta. and Assiniboia,Sask. Feb. 1969 Darrel took over Imperial Oil Bulk now Esso Petroluem Canada. They purchased the former McDonough home place from Jim Mercer, and Darrel also owned the Winder homestead (actually the old Adler homestead). Jerome Canfield has most of it rented. In 1970 they built a new home, where we are living now.We had to haul our own water then because the village had sewer but not water until the flwing year. 2 Children both born at Paradise Hill Union Hospital. Rhonda Lee was born May 17, 1967. She finished her schooling in Paradise Hill and graduated from Reeves Bus. College. She is presently working for Paradise Oilfield and Paradise Hill and Loon Lake Union Hospitals. Marlin Darrel was born Dec. 28, 1972, and is still attending school. I , Shirley, was born on Sec. 18, Twp 54, Rge 23, W3rd, Sask.and my Mom brought me into this world unassisted. In 1907, my paternal grandparents came from Ontario. Eva Maude Blanchard, my Grandma, was born in Sutherland, Ont., in 1883. and Hector McCclellan, my Grandpa, was born in Kingston, Ont. in 1881. My Grandparents were of Scottish descent. They moved to the Kilronan District where they had a family of seven which included my Dad, Robert Reginald McClellan, who was born Sept . 13, 1911. My maternal grandparents were both born in Ireland. My Grndpa William James Craig, was born in Carneal Larne, Northern Ireland on Oct.1, 1886., and my Grandma Mary Agnes Mhood, was also born at Carneal Larne, which is near Belfast on Feb. 7, 1885. He came to Canada in 1907, and she came in 1910. They were married in Winnipeg.,Man. on March 31, 1910. They lived at Southey, Sask. and then moved to the Kilronan District where they had two children Margaret Jane and my mother Bessie Mae. Margaret Craig married Charles Simm and they had one son, Wayne Charles William, born Aug. 15, 1952. His Dad passed away Dec. 19, 1951, and his Mom passed away on Sept. 3, 1965. Wayne went to grad school in Fort Pitt and high school in Paradise Hill. Wayne and I were like brother and sister growing up. He stayed with us often. He has been working over in Libya with the oil exploration for quite a no. of yrs, but when he is back, he makes his home in Lloydminster. Wayne and Leanne have one son, Layne. Bessie Mae Craig and Robert Reginald McClellan were married and had three children, Victor Alfred McClellan born May 24, 1937, Rodney Wesley, born May 22, 1940 and I, Shirley DeAnna, born July 5, 1942. It was W.W.2, and our Dad was turned down by the air force so he wene to work for Tomlinson Const. on the railroad at Kwinitsa, Bc.C., between Prince Rupbert and Terrace. On Feb. 12, 1943, a snow slide went through their work camp and down the banks of the Skeena River. Our Dad, was caught in the slide and was crushed and suffered internal injuries. He died on a special hospital train on the wasy to Prince Rupbert. He was brought home and laid to rest at Glenbogie. I was only 7 months old at the time. At present my Mom lives at Fort Pitt in the same yard as Victor and Doreen and family and Rod and Gloria live at Peck Lake. My Mother and brothers and I lived with my Grandparents until it was time to me to start school I started school at Kilronan age the age of 7. There are a few fond memories of the one room schoolhouse where we had 8 grades and one teacher. We had to walk to school every day winter and summner, rain or shine. I remember taking cheese sandwiches to school in the winter and toasting them on the big pot bellied wood heater. laying "Prisoner's Base", "Fox and Goose", etc. and Srub Ball games at recess was fun, except when the boys cheated and stayed up to bat for a week at a time. When we lived on the farm I had two horses, Nifty and Cheyenne and a pet steer, Pete, which I used to ride all over the place, and I became very attached to all 3 of them. I also had hand at milking cows, driving tractor, and helping with other chores. After Kilronan School closed in 1958, I took my high schooling in St . Walburg. Then in 1961, I moved to Paradise Hill and worked in Dundas's Red and White Store. In those days on a Sat. nite the store stayed open until 11 o' clock and sometimes even midnight. Then after Paradise Hill union Hospital started looking after Goodsoil and Loon Lake Hospitals administration, I worked there as administrator's assit. until spring of 1967. I started back to work in June of 1969 at Novlan bros. , which at that time was only one day per week. However, as the business grew over the years, I continued working, and it has grown in to full time. I started with a manual adding machine and Clem and I shared the same office.
