He came to Hamlin county in 1897 and opened a general mercantile business at Dolph, a community which passed out of exisstence in 1907 when the railroad came to Lake Norden, at which time the business was moved to the new town. His was the first residence to come to Lake Norden. While there he served as the community's early postmasters. Mr. Johnson served as county treasurer from 1913 to 1916 while the county seat was still at Castlewood. In 1917 he was elected county auditor, beginning his service in Hayti with the transfer of the county seat, and serving until 1920. After an interval of four years he returned to public life and was elected county treasurer in 1925, and served in this office continuously thereafter either as treasurer or deputy until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Johnson was born in Sweden in 1866 and emigrated to this country with his parents in 1876. Before coming to South Dakota he attended Northern Illionois Normal School.
