Robert S. Babcock, an alert, energetic and capable business man, is well known
in manufacturing circles of Minneapolis as president and manager of the Standard
Spring Company, which ranks with the leading productive industries of the city.
He is a native son of Minneapolis and during his childhood removed with his
parents to the east. In the acquirement of an education he attended the public
schools of New York state and afterward entered Lehigh College, from which he
was graduated in 1913, on the completion of a course in engineering. Going to
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he began the manufacture of springs, to which he has since
devoted his attention, and he conducted his interests in that city until 1919.
Early in that year he came to Minneapolis and established the Standard Spring
Manufacturing Company, of which he is president and manager. His industry and
executive ability have enabled him to develop a business of large extent and the
firm maintains its headquarters in this city, while it also operates a factory
in St. Paul. The company is engaged in the manufacture of automobile springs,
conducting a wholesale business, and also does repair work. This enterprise is
unique and no other city can boast of a factory equipped for so complete a
spring service as that controlled by the subject of this sketch.
Mr. Babcock married Miss Elaine Fielder and they have a daughter, Nancy Jane.
Through his identification with the Civic & Commerce Association Mr. Babcock
assists in promoting the welfare and advancement of his city and he is also a
member of the Minneapolis Automobile Club. He has never dissipated his energies
over a broad field, but has concentrated his attention upon the business in
which he is now engaged, gaining that specialized knowledge which makes him an
expert in his line of work, and Minneapolis numbers him among its most
enterprising and successful young busi­ness men and progressive citizens.
