An enterprising citizen of Minneapolis is Eugene B. Barnes, treasurer and a
stockholder in the Interstate Security Company. He was born in Alexandria,
Minnesota, on the 17th of December, 1885, a son of Joseph and Mary (Upson)
Barnes. The father was born in Geneseo, Illinois, and came to Minneapolis in
1888. He became identified with the security business and has been active in
that connection ever since. His wife was a daughter of Reuben Upson and a member
of a prominent family of Akron, Ohio. Her father engaged in farming for the
greater part of his life and died in his seventieth year.
Eugene B. Barnes received his early education in the public schools of
Minneapolis and was graduated from the Central high school in 1905. He then
enrolled in the State University and was a student in the law school for one
year. After putting his textbooks aside he entered the security business in
association with his father and learned every phase of the business, beginning
in a very minor capacity. He worked his way up until today he is treasurer of
the Interstate Security Company and a stockholder in the concern. He has proven
a business man of ability and his success is the result of his own efforts,
intelligently directed.
On the 26th of August, 1912, in Minneapolis, was celebrated the marriage of Mr.
Barnes and Miss Jean Robertson, a daughter of James Robertson, a prominent
attorney of Minneapolis, who was for some years county attorney for Hennepin
county. He is fifty-five years of age and has an extensive and representative
clientele in Minneapolis. To Mr. and Mrs. Barnes two children have been born:
Eugene B., Jr., who is five years of age; and William L., an infant.
Mr. Barnes votes with the republican party and although he has never sought nor
desired public preferment, he is actively interested in party affairs and his
aid can always be counted upon in the furtherance of any movement for the
benefit of the community at large. His religious faith is that of the Methodist
Episcopal church and he is a consistent communicant of the Hennepin Avenue
Methodist church. Socially he is identified with the Automobile Club, the
Minneapolis Athletic Club and the Minnetonka Country Club. During the World war
Mr. Barnes gave generously of his time and money in the promotion of the
government's interests. He was a member of the Citizens Protective League and
took a prominent part in all drives, particularly the Liberty Bond drives. Mr.
Barnes is a man of genial and pleasing personality and has the genius for making
and keeping friends.
