One of the most liberal and public-spirited citizens of Minneapolis is John N.
Berg, a prominent attorney, who has practiced here since 1899. He was born in
Norway and received his early education in the public schools of that country.
At the age of seventeen years he came to America alone, and located in this
city, where he has since resided. He entered the Minneapolis Academy and
afterward the University of Minnesota, from which he was graduated with the
class of 1896, and subsequently he took up the study of law in the legal
department of that institution. The LL. B. degree was conferred upon him in 1899
and in that same year he was admitted to practice and opened offices in the New
York Life building. He has always maintained offices in that building and has
built up an extensive and lucrative clientele. His practice is general and he
handles much important litigation before the courts.
On the 4th of March, 1909, occurred the marriage of Mr. Berg to Miss Julia
Nelson and they have one son, John N., Jr., born June 19, 1911. Mrs. Berg is a
woman of culture and refinement and she is prominent in the club and social
circles of this city.
The political allegiance of Mr. Berg is given to the republican party and the
principles for which it stands. Although he has never sought nor desired public
preferment, he is active in party councils and is well informed on the important
questions and issues of the day. He holds membership in the Civic & Commerce
Association and the Charter Commission and takes a keen interest in all public
movements. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and socially is connected with the
Odin Club. During the World war Mr. Berg gave generously of his time and money
in the furtherance of the government's interests and was prominent in all
drives, etc. For recreation from his many professional duties he turns to the
great outdoors and he is especially fond of hunting and fishing, in which sports
he is proficient. Mr. Berg found the opportunities he sought in the new world
and the success he has achieved shows what may be accomplished when laudable
ambition, stanch determination and ability lead the way.
